Chin spoilers

Postby SHEETSTER » 06 Mar 2005 17:14

Does anyone have any experience puting chin spoilers on a 74 standard challenger? Is it something that should, or shouldn't be done at all? :hmmm: I just like the way they look. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I did it too! Took all of 20 minutes with a drill. Love the chin spoiler :thumbsup:

I understand that the big front spoiler was available 'over the counter' during the 1970s. I don't think they were actually made or offered by Chrysler themselves. It may be that they were offered through dealerships but I am not sure.

They were only available for a short time and not many were sold. In fact Jay who owns the green '71 above says he heard there were only 11 made!!!

However some of the old fibreglass parts companies that used to offer hoods etc in magazines used to offer something similar years ago. maybe they still do?

If you want a good (and I do mean good) quality item try asking this guy;

http://www.transamcuda.com/spoilers.htm

He only has 'Cuda spoilers at the moment but last I heard he was going to do a Challenger one too. Maybe he has by now or maybe he just needs an order?

By the way, Dave, those chin spoilers do look rather fetching on your car! I like the way you chose to mount them (angled edge to the outside).

Yes Doug I like the look and I thank you very much for them! :wink:

Pity my front valance was so out of shape I had to take a hammer to it to get the shape right for the spoilers. But as the whole car is getting painted by a good body man that didn't matter.

You can see the hammer and two strips of steel in the photo. I used the steel under the mounting bolts to force the valance into shape as I tightened the bolts (5 x 8mm each side). As the bolts tightened I 'played' with the hammer on the back and the valance formed the same curve as the spoilers. You can just see where the paint/filler has cracked in front of one spoiler.

Dave is that an engine oil cooler I see in the above picture or trans cooler? Reason I ask is I'm looking for a sandwich adapter for a 440 so I can run a cooler on it, but all the ones I have found are for chevy/ford or univerals ones are only 3/8 and and I would like an 1/2 setup.

It is a Summit Racing dual trans/engine oil cooler. At one point I cut it in half and just used the trans bit. Then I changed my mind.....I will probably replace it.

Don't know what inlet size it is but I would guess 3/8. If you find a half inch one let me know.

Did some looking today. It appears that no one makes a sandwich adapter for mopars with 1/2 threads. Found tons of 3/8 threads though. Summit has some nice B&M coolers with 1/2 threads or Fluidyns with AN threads.
