Can a '72 owner help me out?

Postby Kowalski_72 » 28 Feb 2005 19:10

I'm doing a bit of bodywork on my car,and heve repaired a bit on the rear wheelarches. When I got the car someone had bondo'd the swage line so the arch was flush....I've dug this out,but I need a photo of a 72 rear arch to make sure I get the lines right..I hope to put a pair of half quarters on,but I'd just like to tidy it up for now,and get cruisin'!

I think the wheel arch was the same shape all years?

I thought that too,but various companies list quarters 70-71,and 72-74...May just be bumper cutouts/marker lights that are different though.None of their pics are very clear!

Do you want me to take some pictures of my 1970 rear arches? If so is there any particular angle you want the shot taken?

In fact you are not so far away that you couldn't pop around for a look yourself. I am in all week stripping mine down for paint.

Thanks Dave! I really need to see how the lines taper out at the bottom rear, and bottom front, where it goes into the sill,I've got the shape of the arch itself pretty 100%. Newcastle is about 200? miles from me? ,or is your car still over in Glasgow?

I know fibreglass and Bondo is a bit of a bodge, and I feel bad about it! but I wanna use this car this year! I've had enough of missing summers fixing up Fiat X1/9's......

Just what I needed, thanks! I wanted to see if the swage line went right down,or followed the bodyline as they do

Cheers Dave!

Not bad. Possibly slightly too pronounced a shape but better than the 'before' shot for sure.

I wonder if I could make a profile template and scan it for you?

The shape that is in the last pic,was taken off the original metal,I just sectioned in pieces that were rotten/missing.Maybe it looks more pronounced in the pic because of the primer??? The front arches are a very similar shape. If you could send me a profile that would be great!!

The rear arches were the same all five years. The difference between the 70/71 and 72-74 rear quarters was the side marker lights and the holes in which they were mounted.

I tried to take some photos at about the same angle but cannot get to the same side of the car at the moment. After looking again I think you have it right after all.
