Shipping tie downs

Postby Christer » 15 Feb 2005 12:35

Here is a pair of rear factory shipping tiedown brackets. I have never seen them before. Maybe someone else find it intresting too!? I assume that these brackets were for export cars only? Right? (Maybe a stupid question, I donĀ“t know?) Are there supposed to be any similar brackets in the front end of the car?

I had them on my car and mine was never shipped anywhere outside the USA until I bought it.

I thought they were something to do with the exhaust but I couldn't figure out how. :?

Did ALL of the Challengers get them then? Maybe someone can give a definite answer? :D

My 70 rt has them, the air line for the air shocks was ran through the hole but that was all. I assume that these cars were shipped on trains and trucks from the plants like modern cars and look like a good attachment point for a tie down.

Why didn't they just strap down the axle?

A good question! Maybe they were afraid to damage the brake lines? Another possible explanation is that the attachment points maybe had to be reachable from the rear end of the car? :? :? :?

I can see where the undercoating was sprayed around them on my 73. Although im not an expert they dont look beefy enough to be a tie down point for shipping.

Heh I always thought they were part of the exhaust too. My challenger has them and my dads challenger has them, and we both got our cars with an aftermarket exhaust, so thats why I figured they were part of the stock exhaust. I'll just leave them on there....o well

All Challengers were to get these tie downs...they are for the transport truck/rail tie down chains. Much eaiser and faster than the axle, plus when cinched they limit jounce. It appears the assembly plants had a hard time telling left from right - see the TSB attached. My car has them -never been off - still has factory undercoating on them. Hope this helps -Dave

I have heard a bit more about them from other sources too. They were on all the cars so they could be secured on their transporters. Some of the reasons for them existing were to prevent damage that might be caused by straps fixed by transporter drivers but also to stop the shock absorbers getting hot and worn on the journey.

Have them too. Well, better say HAD them... They were of no use (didn't knew what they were for) so I removed them. Should have them somewhere laying around though.

Can image it's for transport, as using these the car can't bounch on it's suspension. Hmmm, should have kept them on mayeb for transporting the car to the strip... see if I can still find them.
