I have been trying to collect some information and pic´s of outside mirrors. I thought I would show my findings. I can´t guarantee that everything is right but I am sure that some of you gladly will correct me then 8) . (The pic´s are "stolen" from ebay.)

That´s a relief. People use to say that I am deaf, dumb and blind

Thought it would be a good idea to start collecting pic´s of various mirrrors since many of us, including me, seems to have problems to see the difference between them.

From the beginning, my idea was to buy a cheap ´73-´74 b-body mirror (passenger side) and swap the base for a ´70 version. I have now realized that it isn´t possible to do so. The ´70 base and housing are connected with only one screw, compared to the b-body mirror where there are two screws. It feels like my best choise now, is to use the b-body mirror just like it is. The disadvantage is that I have to drill one extra hole in the door (The third hole is beeing coverd by the mirrors base). Any suggestions out there?

The background to all this is of course money, or more correctly lack of money. I got the b-body mirror for less than than $100 and the cromed ´70 e-body version would cost me more than $300! The funny thing is that it is quite hard to spot any difference between them, unless you look really carefully. Well that is how I am thinking......

I agree with your thinking Christer. If you can afford to do it perfect then sure you should but if money is harder to come by it is silly spending more than you need on details that will never be noticed except by a concourse show judge.

I have a 1970 drivers mirror and a later passenger mirror. How many people have noticed the wrong passenger mirror in the 15 years I have had the car?

I didn't even notice myself until I bought a gasket for it and realised it didn't fit!

Mirror mirror

Thank you for the great presentation on mirrors. I did not realize that there were so many styles for the e-body. Here is a question for you or anyone else who may know.......
The factory mirrors get fastened to the doors by riv-nuts. Year one sells the riv-nut but you need a special tool to install them. The good tool is very expensive so what do you use if you only need to replace one or two riv-nuts? Curious me!

I thought they installed with a regular pop rivit tool? Maybe I was wrong?

Nope, it's a special tool that resembles a pop rivit tool and works almost the same as a pop rivit tool. The owner of the one I borrowed bought it solely for installing E-body mirror nuts.

I recently located a passenger side mirror and shipped it to my body guy who mounted it andc noticed that it did not match the driver's side- although the bases were the 1970 short bases.
This is forcing me to have to buy a complete set, so I'm on the lookout.
The car's bumpers are currently painted and will be until I can afford to get them chromed- so I'm going chrome on the mirrors.

If anyone knows of a set reasonably priced- I'm ALL ears!

Thanks

Thanks for the in-depth mirror lesson!
So, am I to understand that the 70's outside mirrors ARE different?
The passenger mirror has more of an oval/ teardrop shape than the driver's side, which is more rounded, right?
I want to make sure I've got the right parts on the car, ya know!

Thanks, Christer-

Chuck

Yes, they are different. Look at the third photo down from the top of this thread.

I totally agree! iTs not noticeable in the broad picture

There are three e body 71-74 that i have seen - all the holes are in different places! I suppose someone in the gasket making department at Chrysler must have realised so made a universal fit mirror seal with holes everywhere!

Sorry to bring this back to the top folks, but I have a question.

I realise there is a size difference between the driver & passenger side mirror housings on a '70 Challenger, but is there also a difference in the size of the base? Not the actual base that sits against the door, but the "stalk" - from the base to the mirror housing - is it longer on the Drivers side (making the mirror housing stick out further)?

I only have a drivers side on mine, but was also given repro's for both sides - but they both have short bases, whilst the one on the car has a long base, so I'm assuming the repro's I have are actually for '71-'74 E-Bodies.

The first 2 images do indicate that 1 base is longer - but I'd like to get a confirmation from someone more knowledgeable than myself!

I'll get some images on Monday to clear it up a little.

Cheers!

Absolutely no need to feel sorry. We love it when people wants to discuss Mopars, don't we? :D

I am quite sure that they are "mirrored" (symmetrical). I have not noticed any difference between them. I hope I have understood you right.

I have added hole distances below the pic's. Maybe they will give some useful information?

Cheers ... to make it easier, I've edited one of the images you posted to indicate the area I'm talking about (the red line):

Image

The reproduction mirrors I have a shorter than the one I have on the car.

In the 2nd image you posted above, of the '71-'74 mirror, it looks like 1 is taller than the other (the drivers side with the remote wiring), but it's hard to be certain. Might just be the distance/camera angle playing tricks.

Here they are.

The bigger one on the right is the only one I can find in that size. All passenger mirrors - regardless of what year/body they say they are for - are all the same size as the one on the left (the base is both shorter & narrower).

OK, I've figured it out.

Looking over at B/E&A Resto parts mirrors page - it appears the drivers mirror I have on the car is from a '73-'74 B-Body.

Awesome! Now I know what version to by for the driver side to match.

Can somebody show me a pic or a photo of where the remote mirror control goes in the door panel please. Got a really nice remote mirror for my '72 and I want to install it into my non- remote door

Here you are mate. The cables run through a bracket inside the door to keep them out of the way of the glass.
