Mismatching Fenders?

Postby ryanb56 » 21 Aug 2004 8:28

Hey everyone, this is my first message on here. I just got a 73 challenger project car. I noticed that there was something funny about the front end. The bumper and the grill didn't line up quite right on the passenger side. There is no body damage and I noticed that the two fenders are slightly different. My question is this, are there different fenders for challengers based on model year or were they all the same? In short, do I have two different model year fenders or do I have one off of a Cuda or something? Thanks for any help.

The 1970-71 fender is different to the 1972-74 fender.

The shape is the same but the marker lights and the grille mount different.

hey thanks for confirming that for me. Now my next problem is where to get a 72-74 fender. I have looked pretty hard and have not been able to find anywhere that sells new fenders for these cars. Am I correct to assume they do not make new ones and I will have to try and find a good used one? What about fiberglass one-piece front ends? Does anyone have any experience with those on the street? Particularly making the stock grill and headlights and stuff work? Thanks again for the help.

Goodmark industries will be making steel reproduction front fenders soon but for now you are limited to good used or fibreglass.

Something that blew my socks off last week - A gentleman who seemed to know his stuff, told me a Canadian company was reproducing steel Challenger fenders (unsure about Cuda's). In disbelief, I questioned the source of info. He, told me his friend purchased them about 8 months ago and had him install them - said they fit perfect. Told me a pair cost 495 Canadian. Of course, this made me feel like a knob for playing with my 20 year old glass fenders. I will call him tonight and post the details tomorrow Ryan.

Yeah that would be awesome if there is such a company making those fenders for that price. I checked out the Goodmark website. That sounds promising but they don't post a price or date of availability. Fortunately I have lots more work to do so I can wait for when they're available.

Actually, 70 and 71 front fenders are different as well. There is a notch in the front edge of a 71 fender under the hood that isn't present in the 70. It's to provide access to attach the plastic 71 grille. Other than that, there is no other difference that I know of. At some point, they stopped making the 70's and continued with the 71's as replacement parts for both years to comply with DOT part regs so you will find many 70's with 71 fenders.

Did any other information about a Canadian supplier of fenders ever surface? I see that Goodmark and perhaps others are producing full size repo rear quarter panels at a breathtaking $500 each and can only expect front fenders will be even higher. Over grand for new front fenders is getting pretty silly.
