If I remember right, the hood is body color and only the scoop inserts were painted body color or semi-gloss black. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong. 70 and 71 had black out stripes on the hood and these were decals.

The factory painted all their hoods body color. Hood and scoops both. Springs and brackets too.

The large black-out decal was 1970 only.

Ooops! Make that 1970 and 1971. Although it was a bit different for '71 with 'R/T' cut into it.

How about chromed hood scoop inserts? Dunno what's history on these, but my '70 came from Canada with them. Currently hood and inserts are on '74 as shown on this pic.

No history - no mystery.

(Ha! I'm a poet and I don't know it!)

Someone just removed the paint and polished up the metal.

Heh. Perhaps 'story' would've be better term than 'history'. And no, I won't even try to write poems on foreign language - though story/history rhymes. Anyway, I'm not trying claim this car is 1 of none equipped with special chrome scoop option that was available only for cars manufactured late March 1974. Image

I thought they were chromed. There's little pitting like on bumpers and chrome like shine. I'll take closer look when I visit garage next time.

Could be chromed but they are made of 'white metal' which polishes up pretty well.

They would have been fitted to the hood before it was painted I believe so it would get a full coat of primer/paint.

I have been proved wrong many times before so look out for any other like that.

Hey guys,

If the blacked-out hood option was a decal, then I understand why there is no problem applying them to 70-71 hoods, as they are flat at the leading center edge?? If I were to attempt applying this decal to my 72-74 RT hood, would I have problems due to the small crease located center front of the hood? I've ran the job through my head last night and I'm worried, as I don't want to resort to paint. Has anyone applied this specific decal to a late model RT hood with success?

Thanks

I don´t see the problem, Brant. The only difference between a ´70 hood and a ´71-´74 hood is the bolt holes, where the hood is mounted to the hood hinges. (I think the bolt dimension is larger on the ´71-´74 hood.)

I was told once, that the 70-71 RT hood differed from the late model, as it was flat at the center - top. Thanks for setting me straight guys.
