Self-Etching Primer

Postby Tim Bates (Txiec) » 21 Mar 2003 17:05

Seeking advise on Priming bare metal after media blasting. I'm looking at two different products. Mar-Hyde 5113 which is a single stage ready to shoot primer and PPG 1791/1792 which is a two part primer (catalyst)product. Are they both good products to use. Please give me some insight on this part of the restoration process. Thanks TXIEC

Self-Etching Primer

One problem you will encounter on an old car is the years of a proud owner waxing his or her car. After a time the wax makes its way and starts to bed its self into the metal. It will not show when you etch and prime. Only when you are putting on the last top coats. There are special aditives to add to first top coat which will cause these inpurities to flow to surface. Rub top coat down, same again untill surface clear of inpurities, and finish off top coats.

Self-Etching Primer

If you have the car to bare metal, I would use a two part etching primer. If you still have old paint, well afixed, then a single stage sealant would be good for all. It is far less expensive and is a very good base for more work. As far as old stuff in the paint, wash it, wash it, wash it. Cleaniness is next Godliness. Do you plan to out live the paint job? There is a lot of stuff out there that may do things promised but end the end it all come down to elbo grease. Oh how I wish it wasn't so.Image

Thanks Clint for the http://www.autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/con fig.pl?index web site. This has been very helpful quite a bit but can also give you mixed feelings. I have since also been to a local PPG dealer and they were very helpful. They said there are two schools of people. One that lives Epoxy primer and the other self-etching. Depends on who you talk to. I was thinking of doing this myself, but now I may just have a paint shop shoot the primer for me. Still not sure what will be the best in my case.

Which is the best for working later as my car will be sitting inside for up to 2 years until I will be able to have the final body work and paint applied.
Thanks all
