Flip top gas cap

Postby Adrian Worman » 16 Sep 2015 12:48

I managed to bag a nice shiny nos flip top gas cap but I'm not sure exactly how it seals the filler tube?
I can see how the inner frame attaches to the flange of the filler neck, but how does the cap seal the filler tube? It is there a seperate cap?

Separate small diameter non-vented cap. The flip bit is just a cover.

This is the non-locking version. There also was the locking gas cap which is rarer than hen's teeth, and looks like this :

When they surface on eBay, they usually sell for more than 500 dollars...

The rubber piece inside the flip-top presses on the top of the cap.

Mounted the frame ok but I can't seem to stop the chrome trim ring from rattling, is there a body gasket goes behind it?

No gasket.
You got a replacement quarter panel by any chance? Sounds like the recess is not deep enough.

All the sheet metal is original Daveman, I just think I need to finesse the trim ring a little, I might glue it to the qtr with some black weatherstrip sealer.

I always thought they looked so much better than the basic cap.

What years were the flip top caps available options? I am thinking it was only 70 & 71 but don't really know.

Don't forget that there was also a Charger flip cap. :D It is a completely different animal :D I plan on fitting one to my '79 Ramcharger eventually.

I have tried to keep my 73 Challenger as close to original as I can. I am not sure if the fliptop gas cap was offered in 73 but I do like them.

My '72 is a proper dog Dale and I change whatever I like on it so I wasn't too fussed it wasn't original.
Plus it's only 4 screws & 5 minutes to put vack to stock.

I have a feeling that NrNorm put flip top caps on some '72 cars :?:
I saw a pic of a red '72 from Grand Spaulding with a Hemi, a black GoWing, slot mags, blacked out SixPack scooped hood, rear window louvres, flip top gas cap............ looked as cool as f@ck

I understand what you are saying. I have quiet a few items on my 73 that are not for a 73. Sometimes you just have take what you can find. The front sests are from a Cuda, the hood is from a 70 or 71, and the bumpers from a 74. The wing was on it when I got car and was correct for 70/71. Most people never would know the difference. I will have to keep my eyes open for a flip top cap.
