Ahhh! Jag V12 reminds me of my childhood. My Dad used to get a new X-JS 5.3 every year since I was about 10 years old. It was the very first time I experienced the "kickdown" of a big engine. I remember it as clear as if it was yesterday

I think the flats at Bonneville are too soft for the weight or something. Or the length of suitible run-up to the timing lights and stopping distance is too limiting or something.

Can you imagine how long a track you will need to average over 1000mph through the mile? That is a third of a mile per second!

Or put another way. 17 miles per minute.....

I think the American team will have problems breaking the existing record. They are using the same engine used on many 1960s LSR cars which only went 400mph. I also do not think that aircraft body will be that stable running on the ground at the 800mph they want to run.

I hope it does work though. In the 1960s the record was being broken on a regular basis and it was really exciting following the progress of each team as they competed for the record.

Did you see the mock- up of this beast in the MPH area at the NEC Dave?

Yes. But not until late on the last day. And if Richard Nobel or Andy Green were there and I missed them I will be very upset!

You can't eject. Not enough height for a parachute to open.

Goldenrod. I will have to check but either one pair of engines powered each axle (pair of wheels) or all four drove all four wheels. That is the only two ways it could work. I saw this car at an exhibition in London when I was a teenager. Their record was only broken a few years ago.

There was an article in hot rod a year or so back about the complete restoration of goldenrod.

If I remember correctly, all 4 hemis powered the rear wheels through a complicated set of transmissions, differentials.

The Goldenrod was designed to break Donald Campbell's 403mph record.

The four 608hp Hemi's were mounted in-line and coupled in pairs, back to back, the front pair driving the front wheels and the rear pair driving the rear wheels. Engine rpms were synchronized between pairs by a mechanical coupling. Two 4-speed gearboxes connected each pair of engines to each axle.

It is said that apart from fuel injection and dry sump oiling the engines were stock.

It ran an average of 409.277mph through the mile and an unofficial one-way run of 425mph the next day.

This is a piece designed and made specifically for Bloodhound.

It's the pump impeller, which will force a tonne of hydrogen peroxide (HTP) into the rocket in just 20 seconds.

It seems hard to believe that it will take over 600HP to turn this little paddle wheel (even spinning at over 10,000RPM) - we need our 800HP V12 MCT engine in the car just to turn it!

Are their any other designs in the pipe to threaten the current record? I keep hearing of US teams that are setting up for an attempt, but then they don't seem to come to fruition.

Anyone know what the current wheel- driven record is? I've got the name Al teagues in mind, but that's going back a few years.

I think that would qualify as the coolest of all the cool things I'll ever do in my life. What a brilliant thing to be involved in. For me it carries more kudos than a big- money venture. I like the bloke- in - the- garage feel of going for a home- made machine to try and take the 'true' land speed record. What an adventure that would be.

I think they will eclipse the old record they set, but the 1000MPH mark wont be reached in my opinion. Too many frictional issues with the tires at that speed. A crash would be devastating. Andy Green is a MadMan

Interesting to hear that the Craig Breedlove/Steve Fossett LSR car is now for sale since Fossett lost his life in that air crash.
