30 years!! Where the hell did my life go?

If asked, I would have guessed about 15 years tops, maybe as little as 12. Unbelievable. 30 years. :disbelief:

Interesting to see the amount of preparation and high- end calculations going into this thing. It's a far cry from 'let's strap four hemi's onto a bedstead and see how that works out'.

For some years now I've thought that it would be a brilliant engineering exercise to try and beat the Summers brothers record, but within the confines of their original design. Theoretically it could be done, modern materials are stronger and lighter than in the '60's, and horsepower is easier to obtain now more than ever. But I wonder.....

In the first place, is there sufficient information in the public domain to be able to re- create their 'car' authentically?

Just bench- racing at this point, but if anyone's got four hemi's taking up too much floor space....? :s002:

The daft thing is that a modern race engine a third of the size of one of those Hemi's would make more power than two of those Hemi's...

What about the 10,000 horsepower Hemi''s you posted up the other day? Imagine 4 of those bad boys all trussed up to some insane shopping trolley?

It strikes me that there is more to this press release than meets the eye. Changing supplier so that you now have to work the car design around the rocket rather than the other way around seems like an odd project management decision.

Or maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age.

Is Nammo the same company that produce the Raufoss .50 cal sniper round with the explosive tip (don't ask how I know about this, I can't discuss it   )?

It's all about funding for R & D. A few defense and possible space contracts mean a lot of money in the pot for this company and less money to find for the Bloodhound team.

Haven't seen it on the online edition but the Bloodhound is the cover story of the March 2014 issue of Popular Mechanics.

Very entertaining look around the car and a very amusing flight simulation in a stunt plane to re-create the G forces Andy will have to live with during a 1000mph run.

Fox News has an article up about this http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2015/03/ ... =obnetwork The link has a video also.
Bloodhound SSC ballistic testing shoots bits of wheel at driver at 2,300 MPH
When traveling at 1,000 mph, the Bloodhound SSC land speed record car’s wheels will spin 10,200 times per minute—or 170 times per second. If part of the wheel comes off at that speed, you’re talking about a life-ending projectile.
So what do you do about it? You engineer, you build, and then you test. This is the test, wherein engineers shoot a large chunk of metal at the composite protection panel that will shield the driver, Andy Green.

And they shoot that chunk of metal at 2,300 mph.

Will Andy have a new pair of entry and exit orifices if the wheel should fragment or a rock should kick up? Or will he be safe? Watch the video and learn.
