No. I was at work. They were officially opening the new museum on the university campus I work at.

I have met The Duke before in Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Edinburgh (Spelling?) is the Queen's husband. Just like Prince Charles (her son) is the Prince of Wales. Over there, they get born into titles and get whole countries "given" to them for their first birthday...Dave could probably straighten me up on that one

By the look of pain on the Duke's face, looks like that was a rather firm handshake of yours Dave.

They are honorary titles. The eldest son and heir to the throne is usually titled as "Prince of Wales" just as his eldest son will be when Charles becomes King.
They don't "own" the land. But they do get given large estates to look after. The prince of Wales for example has a large estate (called a Duchy) in Cornwall.
The Duke of York (Charles younger brother) actually has a big house and land in Surrey 200 miles to the South of York and not in York as you might expect.

Huh! So you just assume "he" is awarding ME with something?

Surely it is just as likely that I might be awarding HIM? :p:

OK maybe not.

Thanks for straightening me up there.., i knew it wasn't as simple as that. Also didn't know Charles had a younger brother either, Prince of York. Interesting.

No. An Earl is another title. Much lower down the ranks from Duke.

Thanks for the info Dave. Is there a site that shows the order of peerage (hope I have that correct)? Not necessarily who but more like what the order is (king, queen, crown prince, prince etc)
