dave-r wrote:My first love was a Trans Am like that. Earlier model though (70 or 71 maybe?) with the more rounded nose.
It had a 454 I think? Gold metallic paint and the Honeycomb wheels. It would have been just a couple of years old back then.

The owner was the son of a local used car dealer. He blew the transmission trying to outrun the police one night. Ended up with a driving ban as well as a broken Firebird.

So the car sat for a couple of years in the front window of the showroom. I used to take a long detour home from school so that I could press my nose against the glass and dream of owning a car like that one day. :D
yes dave i too liked the t/a cars, they semed to have a mistique about them, they had alot of options and that front end is killer, o btw chibbys(sorry thats a bad word) had a 454, and the pontiacs, buicks had a 455s i know its only 1 cube but for some reason they were different :tears:

If it's got the factory exhaust you could pick up a bunch of power from a set of tube headers. The engine bay is pretty tight in those cars, but theres no torsion bars to get in the way either. If I remember right the rear gear in those cars was like a turnpike deal. 2.8 or worse? Then again who knows it might have 4.11's in it too! 3 speed TurboHydro 400 tranmission,(Bulletproof), 12 bolt Safety-Trac,(Posi) rear end I think was the correct G.M. terminology, where's Danny when you need him. He's a 'closet' G.M. guy  Yeah let us know Drew, this is interesting.

I have just been looking at a few Firebird websites to see if I could see exactly what year and spec the one I used to drool over as a kid was.

It was for sure a Gold 1971 Trans Am 455 HO with honeycombe wheels. :s017:

If thats what you want Wayne then you should go for it! There are a lot of G.M. people over here,(and probably there too), that would gladly trade for a MoPar. Just wait till HollyWood comes out with another shmokey and the bandit movie. A lot of lemmings over here will want one, BAD!!

Me Too! But I would be very happy with any big block car that is as cool as that 'FireChicken' ( A MoPar term for any Pontiac T/A or FireBird Trans Am ect), a Tin Indian is another 'Puntiac' term. But nothing makes me as 'squinty eyed' as a MoPar! :s003:

Brilliant 'Bird Red, you are one lucky guy!
I've owned a few Poncho's over the year's ;67 Firebird 400 A, 72 LeMans 400 A, 74 and 76 T/A's both 400 4speeds and my absolute favourite ,
{ you are dead right Pat } a 77 T/A 400 4speed, black ,tan interior, factory t-top's,full decal pack and gold pinstriping. Lovely.
Somewhere in my book collection I have a title called Pontiac;Racer's and High Performance Handbook by J. Angeles and P.McCaerthy pub.1981.
It's got massive info and assembly tip's for all engines and chassis, in fact it's Pontiac porn. You welcome to a lend of it mate.
Thank's for reminding me, I bloody love them car's.Just not as much as my Challenger, that would be ridiculous.
Adrian

Nearly forgot, you can make oil pressure and get the oil to the rocker's by removing the dist. and spin up the oil pump drive with a simple homemade tool attatched to an electric drill , good luck!
