I don't blame you, I wouldn't drill new holes to place one. Have you looked at the backside to see if they were filled prior?

Another option would be to clip the studs and glue an emblem down. Yes it would take some paint off if ever removed but the metal is still intact.

340 FOUR BARREL Call Out

I'm with Jon on this one. You may have an after market hood. If not, the call out's probably wouldn't be on your build sheet anyway. They're not listed on my original '73 340, fender tag. Like you, I have no build sheet. On my car, the call out's are five inch's back from the top of the snorkel, or whatever you want to call it. It's not completely centered on the hump. It's just a tad lower. Here's a couple of pic's of my car, and one of a friend's.

Thanks for the input. Patrick, thanks for the pics, nice cars you and your friend have. Since I dont have the car yet I dont know if there were holes filled. The person I bought it from seemed pretty interested in keeping it stock so I assume there were no holes. According to the previous owner it is the original hood as well as all other sheet metal. I will learn a lot when I have the car in hand. If there were never any holes when I check then I think I will leave it off. Of course, that can always change. In reference to the controversy over the Tuff steering wheel. According to my Dodge and Plymouth Red book, the Tuff Steering wheel was available as option code S84 on 1970 Challenger for a whopping $19.16. I wish I could put in some of those options now for the 1970 price. The option I wish I had the most is the Rallye Guage, a tach would be nice with the 4 speed. Oh well,sigh.

Well, so far I have found out a lot about a car I dont even have yet.
1.Door panels without wood insert were original
2.Tuff Wheel appears to be correct
3.340 call out may or may not be original

The next issue is the wheels, any input if you guys arent sick of me yet. :lol:
According to my Red book it appears that my car should have Rallye wheels 14". but I am not sure.

Nice job on the "Tuff" Wheel! I think I paid about $140.00, for mine. But the wood look's very good. A lot better than the original fake wood grain wheel's! :D On the wheel's, I would go with 15"x7" or 8", by Wheel Vintique's. Check out Summet Racing.com. Free shipping, and a good product. You can get any size you want. I liked the stance with 15's in the back. I kept the original 14's up front.

That information is most likely wrong since Alaskan_TA says that the Tuff steering wheel came 1971.

All 1970 Challenger steering wheels:

Thanks to this search: "340 and package" I found this qoute:

dave-r wrote: Now having said that the 340 did not come with the R/T badges officially it does seem to be the case that ALL the 340 convertibles and most of the hardtops did get the badges. Why I don't know.

Believe me i have tried to bore these guys out, but it seems like they have a great patience, since i am still around :lol: I am no expert so listen with the other guys what they think came stock to your car!
But i agree with patrick, the 15 inches look nice! :)

On the replacement hoods it is optional with or without the holes i believe. But if you still want the emblems, and DON'T want to drill holes, you can put strong tape with "adhesive on both sides". That is strong enough, and if somebody want to remove the emblem, it should'nt be a problem. Just some thinner on a rag in worst case... .

That strong tape Jimi was talking about is some good stuff. The owner of our local body shop gave me some for the "Challenger" call out's on my front fender's. They were the original call out's but, used to be on the back quarter's, above the side marker's. :s001: I like them the way they appeared on the 70'. :D That's why I have them there. :thumbsup: Charlie, there's one very important thing you have to remember. It's YOUR car. Make it your own, and enjoy. I'm sure that there is nothing that you would do to it to jeopardize the value of your car. 8) If my car didn't have the "340 FOURBARREL" call out's already. I'd probably find some, and put em on. :biggrin: But, like I said before, Charlie. It's your car. Do what makes you happy. :wink: Here's the new Grant Wheel, I put on last year.

Another page from the 1970 Challenger section of the 1970 Dodge salesman's pocket guide, no Tuff Wheel option shown;

(bottom right, page 29)

If anyone has any factory documentation showing the Tuff Wheel was available on any car in 1970, I would love to see it. :wink:

Hopefully this is not too big to post, it is from the combined 1970-71 parts book, note the 4039 Tuff wheel in the bottom row;

Cool, it loaded! Click on the image to see it in a larger format.

See the footnote at the bottom? Here is the page it refers to. The red highlights indicate the Tuff Wheel. The pink highlights are in the BJ column, B is for Barracuda & the J is for Challenger. Note that that field is blank, so it was not available on the 1971 E-bodies.

So, fo now from what I see the Tuff wheel was not available in anything in 1970 & not in E-Bodies, ever, not from the factory.

If anyone has any proof or documentation otherwise, again, I would love to see it. :nod:

Thank's, Barry. :thumbsup: Great information. But, I sure do like that "Tuff Wheel", in my Challenger. It wasn't an option, but, it should have been. :wink:

Agree, that steering wheel is the most good looking of those steering wheels, and looks firmly and nice... :D The one in the bottom row to the right- one step up looks also nice.. hmm... :)

I agree. I like the bolts visable on that one too. They both look like the wheel seen in the interior closeup shots in Vanishing Point.

That would be the optional rim blow wheel would it not?

I do not have the data books for 1970 or 1971 Plymouth (yet), but I think that the wheel with the bolts may be the 1971 Barracuda wheel?

Hi Dave. I got this wheel from Grant, last year. On Ebay. I think I won the auction with a $137.00 Bid. I checked for a model number, in the box it came from, that's were, I put the original back in. Probably lost the darned paperwork. :roll: I had the original two spoke "Tuff" wheel. This is more like a "Rim Blow", wheel. It is a little bit more thick than the original. Feel's good in my hand's. :mrgreen: It is very beautiful, stunning, TUFF! Shiney! Great stainless metal work on the three spoke's. And, I believe that it's real Walnut . I might be wrong but, I have worked in the wood industry, for the last twenty-two year's. :wink2: I'm not a Pro. But, striving to get there. Check out www.grantproducts.com. Bolts on to our E-Bodie's. No adapter's! :thumbsup: Charlie, notice the old pic of my interior door and old steering wheel. The previous owner got new door panel's, that didn't have hole's drilled for the woodgrain insert's. But, I got the original panel's, with the car. I measered everything, put new woodgrain on the insert's. The final product is on the bottem pic. :thumbsup:

Hi Dave. I found it on grantproducts.com. The model # is 246 Tuff Wheel. Grant want's $247.00 for it. So, I think I did pretty good with that ebay auction. It bolts right up to your column, and horn assembly. No jacking around with aftermarket adapter's. :wink:
