Whats Missing Under the Hood?

Postby 1rallye » 01 Feb 2008 16:58

I just got this 74, and there is something missing under the hood. Anyone know what was removed? Passenger side of fender wall.

Thanks for the info. What is the black cannister for, and do I need it? I will be pulling out the 318, and replacing it with a 360.

Emissions stuff for ecohippies. Depends on your local laws if you need it or not. I removed mine as previous owners had removed all hoses already. I think you're supposed to replace it with new one evey xx thousand miles. Would surprise if any of those were ever actually replaced.

I think it's part of the Clean Air System. Those fumes are from the fuel tank, carb, air cleaner housing/pcv valve fumes ect..You'll need all those parts to make it work as engineered.(It reduces HC emissions, which is unburned fuel vapors that collect in the charcoal canister and supposedly contribute to GreenHouse emissions enhancing global warming). Our cars emit 2000 PPM with carburetors. With todays fuel injected modern cars it's down to 40 PPM. :sleepy:

Jr's right though. I would remove it, it was for lazy Americans who didnt tune their cars as most of em never did anyways. A well tuned machine will burn clean. They were preparing for the inevitable.

Thanks,

I think I will just get a new washer tank and leave it at that. My horns are mounted behind the front grill. I will move them back where they belong.

Really? When did they start doing that? They were definitely on the inner fender behind the washer bottle on the 70 and 71 models. :?

They were on front at least in my 74. No idea if it's original location or not.

Something else I never noticed before. Horn location.

Looking at photos of Challenger engine bays in books it looks as if in 1972 they moved the horns to behind the grille. Maybe to make room for that emiissions canister?

That's right, Dave. In 72-74, They moved them up front underneath the hood latch and placed those charcoal can's where the horn's used to be in 70-71.

I didn´t know that either. You learn something new each day.

I found a couple of pic´s on a well-known auction site. Maybe they are useful? (Pic´s of 72-74 Challengers)
