Not seriously no. It matters to me how well or badly they play because of local pride but also because when "The Toon" are playing well the whole city seems to be in better mood.

But I am not much of a football fan.

Ha Ha...Sorry Pat my fault...Huring is the national sport of Ireland, and Gaelic football is the forefather of Aussie rules football...

Hurling is a game similar to hockey, in that it is played with a small ball and a curved wooden stick. It is Europe's oldest field game.
It features in Irish folklore to illustrate the deeds of heroic mystical figures such as Cuchulainn, the "Hound of Ulster", and it is chronicled as a distinct Irish pastime for at least 2,000 years. The stick, or "hurley" (called caman in Irish) is curved outwards at the end, to provide the striking surface. The ball or "sliothar" is similar in size to a hockey ball but has raised ridges. Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 137m long and 82m wide. The goalposts are the same shape as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one. You may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, you may pick up the ball with your hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. After those steps you may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley. To score, you put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net by the hurley for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points.

As with Gaelic Football each team consists of fifteen players, lining out as follows: 1 goalkeeper, three full-backs, three half-backs, two midfielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards.

In hurling the pinnacle of achievment for any county team is to win the all-Ireland, traditionally played on the first weekend of September, and thus capture the Liam McCarthy Cup.

Its the worlds fastest field sport!!!

Very interesting Wayne. It also appears one would have to be in excellent physical condition. Are women allowed to play?(with the men)? Or do they have their own series/rules? The reason I ask is in this country women are now competing in almost every pro sport save pro-football. Are there any female cheerleaders? The reason I ask is well I'm just that way, I like cheerleaders.

Its actually an amateur sport Eddie and the guys who play it regularly are very fit, as fit as premiership soccer players in fact. Every kid in Ireland would have played Hurling at some point. I stopped playing at around 16 because I got a lifetime bad for an on field incident during a game involving my hurley and a guys knee(basically he cracked me across the head with his hurley, I turned around to find 4 guys standing there with hurleys intact except one, so I knew it was him. The ref saw me hit him and I was sent off, in my hearing to the board I tried to explain they wouldnt have it so I lost the head and walked out never to return.....lifetime ban

....Oh I am also a huge fan of cheerleaders!!!!

My favorite American team's are, "Seatle Seahawk's" of course. Home Team! And the lowly"Miami Dolphin's." :tears: My favorite team from childhood. Have a good one Wayne, :s017: Pat

When I was a student at the University, we had at one time, girls Rugby/field hockey? they were nationally ranked and won a championship I think. I was never a fan of any sports unless it had an engine! F-1, Indy Car, Sports Car racing, any vintage car racing, Moto G.P. and World SuperBike. Although I would love to see any Bonneville Salt flat runs or programming. If I was rich or had money, I would build a car/truck and try to claim a record class. The emerging Diesel classes are still in their infancy and it would be kinda neat to make an attempt in that class. A turbo, diesel, Dodge and some ballsy driver,(woman), would be a blast!! :s002:

You need to check out Gale Banks' site then http://www.galebanks.com/high-performance.cfm
His Project Sidewinder ran over 222 mph at Bonneville and they drove it there hauling a trailer! The Donahoe Baja truck is kicking butt and taking names plus they have some other interesting projects. All twin turbo diesel powered.
Maybe you could find a junker Challenger shell (probably only $5k-$8 :hmmm: ) or maybe the (seemingly) mythical Chinese body shells I keep hearing about. Then drop in a 12v twin turbo Cummins. Possibly even awd :lol2:

British team hold the diesel land speed record. Oh and another British team hold the ultimate land speed record as well with the same driver.

Just thought I would mention that.

Just wondering RedRaven.

Did you post that thing about Roy Keane because you knew that he is the Sunderland manager and therefore the mortal enemy of any Newcastle United fan?

In other words. Were you winding me up? :p:
