Rear ride height

Postby Rizrtse » 17 Aug 2007 1:06

Will changing the shocks (non air type of course) possibly change the ride height of my 70 challenger? I cannot resolve a 1" difference in the rear left side vs. right side and the springs are brand new. If so, what are the best original looking shocks to go with? Thx, Steve/NY

Is the height off in the front, too - as in high in the right rear and low in the left front? If so, your problem could be fixed by adding tension to the torsion bar on the low side of the front.

Jack is right. Even though the front might look level, if one front torsion bar is tighter than the other it effects the height of the opposite side rear suspension.

It is a bit like getting a 4 legged stool to sit on the floor right.

My own car was too high on the left rear. I wound down the front right torsion bar a little and it straightened out without effecing the front ride height.

It is a case of measuring, adjusting, bouncing the suspension and measuring again - at all 4 corners - until it is right. Or as right as it will go.

I was measuring from the top of each wheel rim to the center of each wheel arch to get it right.

I hope he didnt use MoPar SuperStock rear leafs as they are supposed to "sit" that way.

I adjusted the front torsion bar on the right side and it helped a bit...car still sits 1" high in left rear....any solutions?

Keep trying.

Are the front torsion bars turned up the same number of turns?

Are the springs fitted to the correct sides on the car? Correct R/T springs are stiffer on the right of the car so it should sit slightly higher on the right.

Try putting the front of the car on axle stands on a level surface. Is the rear height still uneven?

Try starting with the front again.

With the front on the axle stands back off each adjuster fully.

Then start again. Screw each adjuster in to the point where there is no play between the adjuster and the bar. Then put the car down on the ground and check the height. Make sure you bounce the suspension at each end of the car.

If too low adjust each torsion bar one turn each until you have something near correct front height.

Now check the rear and increase the torsion bar adjuster tension on one side until the rear looks level. Always bounce the suspension after each adjustment.
