I had some good news and more information yesterday.
Despite what the Neurologists think, the Infectious Diseases people are sure what has happened to me.
They have proved that my holiday and injury in the Maldives was not to blame.
It was all down to Influenza A virus. A simple bit of flu.
They have found a huge amount of antibodies to that in my blood. Even though it is not generally accepted that the flu virus antibodies can cause the problem I had which is called a non-viral Encephalitis. The viral team say there is enough evidence out there to prove it can cause this.
So these antibodies attacked the nerves that connect my brain cells and stopped those cells from working.
Then my whole brain and liver became inflamed. About a quarter to a third of my brain had the nerves damaged and so effectively isolated.
The good news is that, unlike MS, the nerves in this case can repair themselves. Not 100% of them. But enough for me to be "normal".
The mystery for the Neurologists was that with that much brain effectively "gone" I have been able to function normally.
Lucky for me the areas of brain affected are all non-critical areas (so I had no organ failier, loss of limb function, blindness, etc) and as I say those cells should be coming back "on-line" as time passes.
So I feel much happier now I know what is going on. Plus this is the first time someone has had the guts to put their reputation on the line and say I will recover. Which takes a lot of the worry away.
