Well guys. I have to thank you again for the good wishes etc.
Very kind of you.

I am back home now and so able to write on here as normal. Although because of my current situation I am in two minds if I should post or not.

I am going to lock this thread once I have finished writing this.

This is because there is a good chance I will not be getting through what is happening to me.
The expression "I am shitting bricks" comes to mind.

I have a chance all will be well but they can only guess the odds and the best they dared give me was 50%.

So no more comments on my health please. Just carry on as normal and if I get any news either way over the comming weeks I will of course let you know.

Keep your fingers crossed for me lads.

Well. I have been very lucky.

I seem to have got through this. I have lost a few brain cells but not enough so you would notice. :D

I still have a constant head ache and pain if I move my head around quickly. But everything else seems to be back to normal.

I am still physically weak (probably more to do with doing nothing for weeks) but my grip is improving and I walked a half mile the other day without too much bother. When the head aches are gone (I assume they will eventually go) then I will be able to start some physical exercise to get back to full fitness so I can get back to work and do some serious work on the Challenger.

Every ones good wishes for me seem to have worked. So thanks to all of you for that.

Dave,

I am sorry this is so late in appearing, but life has been throwing me a few curves as well...... I'm very glad to hear you are recovering. If I do get to your side of the pond again, you are still on my "must see" list.

With great relief,

Jack

Thanks Jack. Hope things are getting better for you too.

I am not as well as I thought I was. I recovered fast at first but things have slowed down a lot.
After doing some small jobs on the car I have taken a few steps back. It really is going to be months yet before I am back to "normal" (as if i ever was! :D ) and back to work.

I have problems in one eye and my liver now. Nothing too serious but it shows that stuff is still going on in my head and body. My wife drove me up to see my mother in her care home yesterday and even that tired me out so much I had to go to bed at 10pm!

I'm getting another MRI scan in April and seeing the neurologist again in May. Hopefully by then things will be a bit better.

I am sick of feeling like an old man. :(

Hey guys, just a few notes on recovery. When I broke my back in 2003, I was out of work for 3 1/2 months, no lifting allowed. I healed up OK, but it took about two years before my upper body strenth returned to the same level. Recovery can take quite a while for some things, I still do not have the energy level I had before the accident.

Be sure to listen to your doctor and due what he says.

Get plenty of rest, do not rush things.

If you are fortunate and have cute nurses, flirt with them.

Wishing complete and full recoveries for all,
Barry

I just found out yesterday that I should actually have died or be in a coma and they can't figure out why not.

I hope they don't fix that problem!

When I broke my back I never did, or have recovered. Of course there's that nasty pinch I did to my spinal cord that gets in the way of everything.

Coma's aren't all that bad. You get to catch up on the sleep you've missed over the years. We have a few things in common Dave as I wasn't suppose to wake up from mine :sleepy:.

When things just seem too tough to take, remember it could always be worse. I truly hope things get better.

I had some good news and more information yesterday.

Despite what the Neurologists think, the Infectious Diseases people are sure what has happened to me.

They have proved that my holiday and injury in the Maldives was not to blame.

It was all down to Influenza A virus. A simple bit of flu.

They have found a huge amount of antibodies to that in my blood. Even though it is not generally accepted that the flu virus antibodies can cause the problem I had which is called a non-viral Encephalitis. The viral team say there is enough evidence out there to prove it can cause this.

So these antibodies attacked the nerves that connect my brain cells and stopped those cells from working.
Then my whole brain and liver became inflamed. About a quarter to a third of my brain had the nerves damaged and so effectively isolated.

The good news is that, unlike MS, the nerves in this case can repair themselves. Not 100% of them. But enough for me to be "normal".

The mystery for the Neurologists was that with that much brain effectively "gone" I have been able to function normally.

Lucky for me the areas of brain affected are all non-critical areas (so I had no organ failier, loss of limb function, blindness, etc) and as I say those cells should be coming back "on-line" as time passes.

So I feel much happier now I know what is going on. Plus this is the first time someone has had the guts to put their reputation on the line and say I will recover. Which takes a lot of the worry away.

Great news Dave, :D

Maybe you have more brain cells to spare than the rest of us. Now you will be just "normal".

Trying to keep and eye on the few I have have have left. :s006:

If I was normal or had any common sense I wouldn't be trying to run a stock Challenger in the UK let alone a 550 horse 11 second Challenger. :hmmm:

Glad to hear the good news! Obviously, it must have been the GM nerves that were adversely affected..... all the MOPAR ones seem to be working just fine! Take it easy and take it slow!

Hey Dave: Glad to hear your getting back to UnNormal. I didn't realize how sick you were. I told you I was new at this computer stuff, and it sound's like you were sick when you were giving me all that good advice. Well, thank's for all you do! :D Chat with you soon: Pat

I have to tell you. The first couple of nights in hospital I was going to sleep not knowing if I was going to wake up again.

That was a very strange position to be in. But I wasn't scared as such. I felt a lot of sorrow. Mainly for my wife Diana. But I also felt anger. Like I had been short changed in a shop or pub.

And I thought ***k that. No-one short changes me. So I decide I was going to wake up in the morning and then I went to sleep. I was very tired. It might have been the morphine.
