Hemi/Six Pak I.D.

Hey guys...I was wondering if you all could help me out...I am getting my site together and I am trying to get some info together for it...
What seperates Hemi cars/six pack from non-hemi cars...
This is what I remember off the top of my head...
1.)The VIN on the dash, fender tag, door jamb, partials on the radiator support, engine, tranny, trunk lip (or is that only on A-bodies and post '74??). It must be an "R". The fender tag has an E74 code.
2.)The skid plate on the K-frame
3.)3/8" fuel lines as opposed to 5/16"
4.)NO AIR CONDITIONING!!!
5.)Thicker torsion bars (15/16 as opposed to 7/8 ) NOT SURE HERE!
6.)Front fenders shared with the T/A (If that is the case then the Hemi and T/As each have their own unique passenger's front fender because of the antenna location??)
7.)Torque boxes in front of the front spring perches
8.)Extra-half leaf on the passenger's side spring
9.)RESONATORS!!!
10.)*Back to the engine compartment, the hemi (E-body-only??) had their own unique brake booster/master cylinder setup (or is it just a bracket that repositions the setup to clear the heads??)
11.)*Was there a special steering box? I didn't think there is but...
12.)*I heard a partial VIN is on all challengers on one of the framerails or the underseat area...
13.)*Were there plates welded to the floorplan to reinforce the uni-body?
That's all I can think of off the top of my head-If you guys can help me out with that I would greatly appreciate that.

I have my challenger article on the site, but no images in the history section. I am working on my '58 Coronet section currently, I should have it up by this week. I do have Steve's (71 pacecar) dash switches on the site, as well as pics of my dads old challenger that Greg Bulingher restored in the mid nineties. If any of you guys wouldn't mind donating pics of your car for my site, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks! Kelly

Interesting site you got there Kelly. I've never seen the history of the Challenger linked to Adolf Hitler before!

Thanks!

Yeah that is a first...Dr. Zatz at allpar.com told me that the challenger history I had on there needed more information. Yes the Challenger could plausibly be linked to Hitler, but most things post WW2 has changes attributed by the war.
I am going to add more challenger stuff (a few more pages)-vins codes production, colors...Does anybody know if the Simca bolted any Challengers together?

Here are some comments:
1) R=Hemi car, V= 440 six pack car.
3) I guess the 440-4 also got the 3/8 lines, right?
5) According to my books, the diameter of the torsion bars are 0.92". That is somewhere in the middle of 15/16" and 7/8".
10) Yes, the Hemi cars had a unique brake booster. It looks like in the photo below.

Actually the history of the Challenger goes right back to the War of Independance so really I think it should start there.

Then again the Challenger really started with the roman chariot (6 hp performance version) so maybe the history should start there.

In fact without Ben Hur they would never have been a Challenger.

1.)The VIN on the dash, fender tag, door jamb, partials on the radiator support, engine, tranny, trunk lip (or is that only on A-bodies and post '74??). It must be an "R". The fender tag has an E74 code.

E74 is for Hemi cars. E87 and 'V' for 6-pack 440s.
2.)The skid plate on the K-frame
3.)3/8" fuel lines as opposed to 5/16"
4.)NO AIR CONDITIONING!!!
5.)Thicker torsion bars (15/16 as opposed to 7/8 ) NOT SURE HERE!

Part of the Track Pack or Super Track Pack. 0.92' diameter.
6.)Front fenders shared with the T/A (If that is the case then the Hemi and T/As each have their own unique passenger's front fender because of the antenna location??)

No. The only reason the antenna was relocated on T/As and AARs is the risk of radio interference with non-metallic hoods. Hence the need to relocate the antenna to the quarter. No such problem on steel hood 440-6 and Hemis. You might wonder about the -very- few cars that did get a T/A hood instead of a power bulge hood.
7.)Torque boxes in front of the front spring perches

Standard for Hemi cars and convertibles. Not available as options, AFAIK.

8.)Extra-half leaf on the passenger's side spring

I'd say that's probably a part of the Track Pak options, but I'm not sure. The Track Pak was standard on the Hemi.
9.)RESONATORS!!!

I've read that too. I think the H-pipe was also a Hemi-only item.

10.)*Back to the engine compartment, the hemi (E-body-only??) had their own unique brake booster/master cylinder setup (or is it just a bracket that repositions the setup to clear the heads??)
11.)*Was there a special steering box? I didn't think there is but...

Nothing Hemi or big-block specific. Manual, Power, and Quick-Ratio Power steering available.
12.)*I heard a partial VIN is on all challengers on one of the framerails or the underseat area...

Apart from the last 8 digits of the VIN on the cowl area, and the radiator core support, I don't know. I'd like to know if that's the case.
13.)*Were there plates welded to the floorplan to reinforce the uni-body?

Apart from the torque boxes? AFAIK, no.

Both the 440 4bbl, 6pack, all convertibles, and the hemi got 4 torque boxes in all four corners of the unibody. All 440s and hemis also had a welded on plate above the pinion snubber. The hemi may have had an extra plate again but I am not sure.

I have no comment to make on the location of every code. But you would not find one on the boot seal lip.

Most 1970 440 4bbls also got a skid plate on the k-frame.

Extra half leaf spring was also a 440/440+6/hemi thing.

The pinion snubber!! I knew there was something I forgot!
World War two was definitely pivotal in the reshaping of the 20th century. The Challenger probably would have been there, as well as most of the musclecars, possibly earlier, maybe later...
