That sums up to about 500 new users every year. If we can keep that pace, we will be about 18500 users on my 75th birthday! (Year 2040) :s005: :s003: :s003: :s024: :s016: :s017: (The smileys were chosen by my daughter....)

And let us not forget we have JR to thank for this message board being here at all. I had given up trying to get my head around the complexities of running a truly independent forum. Because of his efforts this is probably the best run message board out there.

I agree, jr is awesome! He hosts both of my websites on his server too.

Thanks again jr!

Well
I was way out on the wrong side (or some month and a half). Today we are a 1000 members!!

Well look at that.

I didn't think it would happen that quick. Just a couple of months ago I was wondering if we would hit 1000 members by Christmas.

With that many members you would think there would be more chatting on here wouldn't you? :?

I'm not complaining though. Things are ticking over nicely. :D

I was just thinking how the board has livened up in the past few days! I used to pop in on a daily basis and not much was happening, now I need to visit every couple of hours just to keep up!
We are a true global village.

this is the best site that I have ever come across. The only issue is nobody is really movin a whole lot while I am on. Granted I am on durring the work day here and probably early morning over seas. but I do enjoy chatting with everyone and it is just a huge wealth of knowlege out there. I appreciate everyone who has thrown in thier two bits and mucho thanks to the creator of this awsome web site

If there is a demand for a chat forum as well as the message board then that might be something that could be organised.

The main problem would be time zones though.

If a chat setup is desired I would have to suggest an IRC server would be the best setup. JR could probably set it up easily, if not I could possibly set it up, and run it, it requires software to join the server and chat with others but there are also Javascripts that would allow a web page interface to the server that could be linked from here. Just my 2 cents worth.

Well look at that, 1000 members. :s004: :s004: :s004:

Congrats to all involved.

Well that's exactly what Dave asked for couple days ago in private message.

Couple things that usually are done wrong with IRC based chats.
- uses public IRC server; problems with IRC-splits and full servers
- java applet on webpage; problems with browsers lacking java support, outdated java support, firewalls blocking access to IRC servers

I agree that chat should be accessible using regular IRC client and not only from webpage.

Web part of chat shouldn't require anything special. Javascript is ok, but Java isn't. Connection to IRC server should be done on webserver side, not from client running webbrowser. IRC server should be local and dedicated - not part of some public IRC network.

Some bot watching channel would be needed too. Otherwise some irc-spambot might found our server and flood others with pointless advertisements.

I don't know if suitable fully web based server side IRC client exists or not. If such thing does exists putting chat system together is quite possible.

Another is archiving of chats. Should discussions be archived on webpages available for members?

I think if there was a large demand for chat from the members we should maybe give it a go (if JR dosen't mind doing the work) but if it is only a couple of people wanting to use it I think it would be hard to justify it.

Also because of the nature of "chat" I would want any content deleted at some time every day.

So. If you want chat cast your vote!

I have started a poll in another thread so you can vote.

JR. If you have any objections to us having a chatroom your vote overrides all others. We don't go ahead without your say so no matter what the result.

Well, if there's need for chat you'll get one. :) We'll see how poll turns out.

jr from previous irc servers that I have been on for awhile, the bot watching I can take care of with a simple script, and the archiving i can also take care of with a simple script. Yes using a public irc server would not be a good idea, setting up a private one is not hard nor should it use much bandwidth(i think on latter part, not sure).

http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/
Take a look at that jr and see what you think.
