Well chaps & chapesess i got my anorack on today & started to look at nos on my car as i bought this car without a fender tag,i had already checked the nos on the dash & body nos & they all matched & now i know where to look the car is nos matching completly, not so unusaul but this is a 1970 straight six car & no one has cloned it,i have checked the fender & it has never had the holes drilled for a fender tag & after speaking to several folks in the know its not so unusual the quandary is im going to change the engine/box & all the running gear so i will have to keep all the bits if you folks think its worth while,i only wanted a cheap car to do as i wished with which is why when there was no fender tag i thought so what but now its turning out to be a real find

WHAT WOULD YOU DO & IS IT WORTH REAL MONEY :s006:

Being rare and being worth money are two different things.

The value of a car depends on how much other people want it and not many would want a slant six car.

It is a real shame that most of these get transplants. I do hope someone somewhere keeps one and restores it.

But then again some would argue (me included) that the Challenger should never have had anything other than a V8 as an option.

I would guess it was done for those who would otherwise not be able to afford the insurance (i.e. the very young) or maybe the parents of that same group felt that a smaller engine would be a safer option for their kids?

I don't know the answer to that one. But i do know that if you had two identical cars except for one having the slant six and one a V8 you would get more money for the V8 even if it was "just" a 318.

I say keep the numbers-matching slant-6 and transmission on a pallet in a corner of your garage, packed with oil/grease for long-term storage, do the same for the rear-end (it will not withstand serious V8 power), get a set of conversion engine mounts from Schumacher, a built small-(or big-)block and transmission, electronic ignition, a 8 3/4 rear, new driveshaft and hardware, torsion bars, etc..

It's all a question of money (and storage space), but since you are at least considering the collector value of your car, don't do any mods that can't be undone.

This way, you can have fun with your Challenger, ans still return it to its original condition in 2 week-ends time if you want to.

You could also build the slant-6, but performance slant-6 parts are rare as hen's teeth (read : it will cost more to get 200HP out of a slant-6 than 400 out of a 318), and if something goes wrong, the broken rod will go through your matching numbers block, not some boneyard small-block that can be replaced.

Take your time, look at the possible options, check how much it's going to cost you, and be realistic about what you want to do with the car : Right now, it's a nice cruiser. You can turn it into a very nice cruiser and an amusing strip car with no chassis modifications. You can't get very much under 12-13 seconds without serious mods.

There were 9,929 hardtop Challengers built in 1970 with the slant-6.
So I guess the collector value of this mint slant-6 car will be nowhere near that of the same car with R/T goodies and a big-block (at least during my lifespan). If it was mine, I'd drop a stroked big-block inside it, install torque boxes, frame connectors, and a strong rear-end.

Your car, your money, your decision. And your sleepless nights with a Summit Racing catalog...

And there goes pobably the rarest Challenger inthe UK!
Only kidding, as Dave says, rare dosent always mean desirable (check out the BL Princess!). Sounds like youre doing the best thing going the built small block route.

Steve if you get dirty with anything other than your wife she would kill you & as for doing that to your challenger she would cut your nobblies off & ask a freind called Mrs Bobitt to take away your jack up kit
