First time out...

Postby 72 Challenger (Hans) » 19 Jul 2005 18:28

Hi Guys, as some may remember my real first time out with the new setup was not what I hoped of it. Damaged the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and 3th gear without making one run... So up to Denmark we went (thanks again Trillebille) to get a 727 built to handle the power and put it in asap.

We had it in right before a car show which should have been the test drive with a good working car. Still running to hot so we parked it half way there. The **** thing was still running hot, even after some mods... Final thing we could think of was a radiator. So I got one from a buddy over here to use to see if it helped any. Took mine out, his in. As soon as I took his I was wondering why mine was so much heavier? Shake it to find out there's still water in it...huh... Watched inside mine to found out there's all kind of (news)paper in it... I did took it out clean half a year ago but now... Looks like some mice build a crip in it...

Anyway, with my buddy's radiator it workes fine! Watertemp 170*, Oil temp 180*, Tranny temp 170*, Oil pressure 40@idle 80@3500rpm, Fuel pressure 8psi at all rpm's. All looking good right?

So there we went to the strip to run it for the next 'first time out' (first time super street car class too, 10.900 index) came there on thursday to stay over till sunday.

Qualification on friday / saterday and the eliminations on sunday.

Qualifications
Thanks to our Dr. Performance over here I was capable of running a good run right of the trailer. Withouth having actually driven the car so far he was able to setup the finetuning so that we could run up to the finals withouth adjusting anything but tire pressure and shifting points! Thanks mate!

1st run off the trailer was a 11.246 @ 123.0mph
2nd run was a 11.120 @ 123.6
3th run was a 11.043 @ 125.3
4th run was a 11.066 @ 124.8
5th run was a 10.930 @ 125.9
6th run was a 11.030 @ 126.1
7th run was a 10.914 @ 126.4
8th run was a 10.961 @ 125.3

Image

Eliminations:
1st round was a 10.984 @ 122.8 (on the brakes) vs a 10.824
2nd round was a 10.946 @ 125.8 vs 10.833
3nd round was a bye

Then in the final I lost with a total diff of 0.04sec.

Image

All in all a great weekend. The 10.914 made me #1 Qualifyer and off course so far my personal best.

The timeslip of that run was:
0.016 RT
1.648 60ft
6.995 1/8 @ 100.7
10.914 1/4 @ 126.3

Image

So not to bad running a 10.9 with that kind of 60fts right? Now it's time for a real converter Launching at 2400rpm is not enough. Better try my buddy's 8" converter then.

Sorry if this was too long of a thread, but had to share my happiness with the results of the new setup...

Forgive me Hans but I have been waiting a l o n g time to say this...

TOLD YOU SO! TOLD YOU SO! :wink2:

Those are great results considering the 60ft times. Get a 4000rpm convertor in there and those front wheels will be pawing the air like a tiger.

Now tell us. How dose it feel going from running 12s to running 10s? Does it feel a lot faster? Did it make you nervous at all?

NONONO Dave... It wasn't because they weren't up to the task... I had a tranny leak which spoiled the oil onto the clutch plates. On the street (only about 50miles so far) I really didn't noticed as there was only wheelspin. But on the track with traction it went slipping...and then it's carnage time.

Yep, we'll put in my buddy's 8" converter next month (launched 4000rpm with it with the 340) to get some more air under the front  The difference wasn't that much (at least it felt that way) because of the small difference in launch. I mean, the 60ft was only .08 faster... Next time when hopefully pulling 1.4's 1.5's in the 60ft, then I will feel the diff. I felt it mostly at top end as then it starts 'wondering' down the track because of the high speed / flat tires / dragshocks / no sway bars / 6cil. torsion bars...

In ET it's quit a difference going from 13.3 to 10.9... can tell you that!!

No I want some nice wheely pics... :s003:

If it is wandering a bit at the top end try another 2lbs of pressure in the rears.

What a great set of photo's of a stunning looking car Hans.

Congratulations on running so quickly, so consistantly.

What's the current spec on the car?

Can't do the extra 2lbs Dave, will lose traction that way. I'm already running 12psi in the rear. But I'll get used to the wandering pretty soon. Maybe I'll mount the sway bar again...

The specs are roughly as following Tim;

528 Alu Hemi
Ported Alu '65 hemi heads
Solid cam, 283@050 w/ 670 lift
Barton Intake
1050 Dominator carb
10.5:1 CR

727 Tranny build to handle the horses.
2500stall..... :disbelief:

Dana 60
430 gears
29x10.5W Hoosiers
Caltrac system

Oh jah, it weighs in at 3720lbs...

I see. However when you get the high stall converter you will get more weight transfer so it might work?

On my car I found 8lbs was scary at the mid-to-top end of the track. And that was with very good (not-drag) suspension. An increase to 10lbs was better but I used 12lbs the last time and it seemed very good and stable without loosing traction. However my engine problems after the first run stopped me getting real results.

Sway bars will help if the problem is torque induced. Is the chassis leaning as it runs up?
Try a sway bar front and back. A rear one also helps load the wheels evenly at launch.

Scary...why's that...?

I ran with 12lbs now and with the front sway bar mounted the handling is not that bad. We're not running around corners anyway... As you say the 4000 converter might give me a better weight transfer anyway. Whatever it does, it should launch a lot harder. Can you spell WHEELY...

By the way, it weighs about the same as it did with the 340 in it... Only a couple of hp/trq extra.

WHOA!!! That is awesome. That car is set up perfect, you probably couldn't launch any better than that suspension wise, bugger all lift, the body is up on all fours, good traction with times to prove it!

I've said it before and I'll say it again - YOU can't beat a TorqueFlite-727.

8) Great photos and reading.

Thanks guys!

The 727 will stay in for a while as if I want to fix the Liberty box it will take around 2500euro I guess... (new output shaft, gears, bearings, pressure plate, clutch plates etc.) I just put in a different converter this week as the 2500 stall wasn't really the best part of the combo. Now I can hold the car at 3600rpm on the streets (instead of 2000rpm) and it flashes to 5k. So...NOW it's screaming on the street...putting down around 20meters of footprint with the slicks still under it!

Let's see if I can raise the front wheels up a bit more!

It feels like you have done a tremendous job on the car, Hans! Congrats! It really has that nasty and mean look that many of us strive for. The only disadvantage, as I see it, is that quite a few will refuse to race against you..... :D Is it bye, bye to the street now?

Nono...no bye bye to streets now... Still very streetable I have to say, haven't run many streetmiles yet (maybe a 500mile) because of a lot of minors things I have to do to the car. For example I can't run on the highway for a long time, still need to install a engine oil cooler. I had one laying around but taht one is used for tranny oil now. But except for the temps it runs great on the street too.

I just have to forget I have towards 800hp under the right foot and then it will run just like my old 340 did

Last week we had the car on the scales to check the weight and stuff. Man that was a scarry moment I can tell ya that... Raceweight 4212lbs...still 4212 after resetting the computer 2 times... NEVER expected it to be that heavy!! But that tells me one thing though, after using Dave's spreadsheet. 127mph w/ 4212lbs means 678hp on the rear wheels!!

In other words, I have to loose 900lbs to run supergas (9.90 index)... Lot's of fiber...cheaper to get a procharger then...
