Numbers matching is nice if it's a rare car. If its you average 318 with a 904 tranny, I would not kill the check book to get a matching car. Now, a 440 Shaker or Convertible big block, time to spend the $$ to keep it matching.
Ultimately, is the car for collection and $$ appreciation, or do you want to drive it?? If you want to drive it, make it any color and combination you can afford (stay tuned, because you can spend a bundle) and enjoy.
If you are looking for an investment, find a sought after car, keep it matching and original. Then go buy a toy you can drive to keep the temptation down.
Have fun!
Ps. don’t buy a crate motor
