Shocking shipping quote

PostPosted: 01 Apr 2005 16:08
by Christer
Usually, I am not very picky when it comes to shipping quotes, but everyone has their limits....A couple of days ago, I bought a left hand remote mirror on ebay. YES!!!! I thought then.... Now I am not as satisfied because he has sent me a $125 shipping quote!!!! (4-5 times more than a correct shipping quote, if you ask me) I suspect that the seller thinks that I got the mirror too cheap, so he is trying to compensate it with a ridiculus shipping quote. I don´t know. I am not going to pay him that kind of money anyway. My question is now whether I shall give him a negative feedback or not. I dislike doing that but if I don´t do that, he will probably continue with these ridiculus shipping quotes. (Are we buyers maybe too soft when it comes to giving negative feedback? Any opinions out there? :? )

I have complained to him and this is the answer I got:
I'M SORRY BUT THRU UPS THEY QUOTE $125.00.I KNOW THIS SOUNDS CRAZY SO IF YOU WANT TO JUST PASS ON THIS AUCTION I'LL UNDERSTAND.PLEASE LETS NOT GET CRAZY WITH ANY BAD FEEDBACK.

I hope you get the whole picture. What do you recommend me to do?

I recomend you call UPS yourself. Get your own qoute - It'll take you 5 minutes (find out his address). You won the auction - end of story. I'd offer for it to be sent my way, then I'd forward on to you as gift, but as it crosses customs at the Canada, US boarder, you'd get dinged a brokerage fee. Like 20 - 30 bucks anyways. How much was the mirror? I would also make sure it is clear to him that it is against ebay terms to inflate shipping costs or make up some sort of jazz. That is rediculous for a small tiny mirror!

Thanks Brant! Since I have bought similar items before, I know that the shipping (Air) is not more than $20-$30 (or something like that). I don´t think that the shipping varies very much between the states, when it comes to shipping to Europe. Maybe I just should blow this hole thing off, but then it feels like the nasty seller wins. :s008:

Double check that shipping quote so you know for sure. You will look silly if UPS really did quote that much.

Thanks Dave! I will try not to do anything hasty. :s022:

A premium seller use to have a couple of shipping alternatives to choose from. This seller only had one alternative and that alternative su**s. I feel that it is the sellers obligation to try to find a decent shipping alternative and not mine. If I would agree to pay, I would pay $100 for nothing. That isn´t fair if you ask me.

I just mailed him and said that if he cant´t ship for less than $30, then it is better that we skip the whole thing. It will probably end with the fact that I won the auction but got nothing!!! (I will NOT give him a negative comment)
.....but what the heck, it´s friday!!!! :s019:

If anyone else has any similar stories to tell, it would be intresting to hear them.

I have been in similar situations. UPS only offers Second Day air to Alaska, and the shipping is usually 10 - 20 times what it coud be mailed for via USPS. I just do not buy anything from anyone who offers UPS only.

I can check my stash of mirrors and see if I have an extra one too.

Thanks Barry! That explains it! What I dislike with this seller is that he didn´t give me a fair chance. The ebay ad says NOTHING about UPS only shipping. That information should be included if you ask me.

I still suspect that he thinks I got the mirror too cheap ($27.98!!!!!) so he wants this buy to be undone. Who wants second day air on a cheap used mirror? Nobody! Lessons learned the hard way, I guess....

Hey Christer,
I took a quick look. I have one the same style as pictured in the auction with broken glass, it is for 1971 up. Based on your avatar are you looking for one to fit a 1970 model? Those are harder to find.

I couldn’t find the postal code for Gothenburg, I guess because it’s the cultural center of Sweden.

If you European guys need SMALL stuff shipped I’ll do it for you. However, no bitching about me being slow, dumb, or incompetent. You get what you pay for which is zilch.

Sorry I haven’t been posting..........I’ve just finished getting my car up and running. What a pain in the ass. I bought him a stable mate.......which is my next project.

I’ll provide details later

On the subject of feedback Christer, I once had a guy that I bought a video from on ebay turn round and tell me when the sale was completed that the tape didn't have a box...no mention of that at the sale...so I said I didn't want it and please return the cheque or tear it up when it arrived, about a week later I found he had cashed the cheque and never did send me the tape...so I obviously left some negative feedback...then the cheeky expletive deleted left negative feedback for me in return, meaning that I don't now have 100% ebay feedback... :fight:

"I still suspect that he thinks I got the mirror too cheap ($27.98!!!!!)"

Boy, that's a great buy!!! Some of these are getting hard to find. People tell me $200.00 and up is the botom line (depending on quality).

This whole thing took a very unexpected turn today.   The seller mailed me and asked: PLEASE TELL ME HOW ELSE I CAN SHIP THIS AND I WILL. Mr Badguy wasn´t bad after all. I APOLOGIZE. Now the next question arises: What do I tell him? :? Any help from our american friends? USPS is the way to go, isn´t it? (Fairly cheap and quick!?) Do I recommend him to go to the nearest post office or what?

Cool! Yup, good old US mail is the best way to go. I mailed some small items to France not long ago for a little over $12.00

Thanks everyone for trying to help me out. Much appreciated! :D Lesson learned is not to take anything for granted. :|

Not quite, I think. Since this is a left-hand (less valuable than the right-hand)´71-´74 mirror (less valuable than the ´70 mirror), it is worth (I hope) somewhere between $75-$100. At least, that is what they use to sell for on ebay (if you ask me).

How it ended? I never got "my" mirror in spite of all efforts. When I recieved feedback from the seller (two weeks later) about the shipping cost (he agreed to send it for $30), the "Pay-Now"-button (I use paypal) already had disappared. I tried to pay using the item-number, but the computer said that I wasn´t the winner of the item. I gave up!

neuralyser wrote:...so I obviously left some negative feedback...then the cheeky expletive deleted left negative feedback for me in return, meaning that I don't now have 100% ebay feedback... :fight:

That´s about how I had figured out that it works on ebay. I understand that it can be annoying not to have 100% positive feedback, but I don´t think that it will hurt your business to any large extent.
