Wanted Challenger Propeller Driveshaft

Postby rrljan55 » 09 Jan 2010 9:51

I am a new member to this message board, so if this posting gets 'stuffed up' i am sorry.
Firstly i should say that i am in Australia.
This does not present a problem as I have a good contact in CA who can get "things" to me in his containers that he is always shipping to Australia.
Anyway, I am in search of a Propeller Driveshft for my '70 Challenger.
The actual part # is 2883782 (not that this is marked anywhere on them)
Its to fit my Challenger that has an A833 trans and a 8.75 S-Grip Differential, both have yoke fittings for the larger 7290 U-Joints (2-5/8").
The driveshaft length (centre to centre of U-Joint) is 45.85".
This driveshaft came on
'70 Challenger with 318ci with 4-speed only,
'70 Challenger with 340ci with all transmissions,
'70 Challenger with 383ci with all transmissions.
'70-Challenger 440ci or 426 Hemi auto transmissions

Alterntively, the diveshaft from (these are only 1/4' shorter (I think?), so i can take up difference in slip yoke (I think?))
'71-72 Challenger with 340ci all transmissions,
'71 Challenger with 383ci-4BBL all transmissions,
'71 Challenger 440ci or 426 Hemi auto trans only.

Anyone out there that can help would be appreciated, as parts in Australia are very hard to come by.

Rud.

I choose to refer to Paul Herd since I have not got any better source . (I have learned that his books are not 100% correct.) This is what I got:

#2883782, length 45.85"
This driveshaft came on
'70 Challenger with 318ci with 4-speed only,
'70 Challenger with 383ci-2-BBL with all transmissions.

#2883656, length 45.60"
'70 Challenger with 340ci with all transmissions,
'70 Challenger with 383ci-4BBL with all transmissions.
'70-Challenger 440ci or 426 Hemi auto transmissions
'71-72 Challenger with 340ci all transmissions,
'71 Challenger with 383ci-4BBL all transmissions,
'71 Challenger 440ci or 426 Hemi auto trans only.

I an not so sure that you are right there. I am quite convinced that my propeller shaft has the part number (#2883656) stamped on it. I found it hidden beneath a layer of surface rust and it was placed on a surface close to the u-joint.

Finding the correct propeller shaft is probably not very easy (Maybe even close to impossible?). The only Mopar that had a shorter propeller shaft compared to the Challenger was the Barracuda. In other words, finding a too long propeller shaft is quite easy. Just take it to a competent shop and make it shorter, and you are ready....(Finding a competent shop is not very easy though. I have tried, failed and got disappointed myself...)

Another route is to buy a do-it-yourself kit from Mopar performance. Also in that case you will need a competent shop. The "U-joint and prop shaft assembly kit" has the part number 4876886 (7290) in the 2002 Mopar performance catalog.

I believe that both of these two propeller shafts will work just fine. I believe that this length difference just has something to do with fine-tuning, vibrations, frequenzies and so on. I have worked at the assembly line myself and I remember that we had about 15-25 different propeller shafts to choose from. Well, I might be right or I might be wrong.... :s022: :s023: :D

Good luck!

Good information Christer! We had a top notch shop down in Ventura when I lived there. Had new u-joints installed and balanced on the Challenger with same day service. Oh, for that convenience again. :tears:
