Goldenblack440 wrote:sorry, i'm in a silly mood... not sure what factory colour was but i feel that simple gloss black looks great on all undercarriage. I wouldn't use an epoxy based one pack enamel or POR15, which is a ceramic fortified paint on the leaves because i think these paints are too hard and with the constant flexing, the paint might crack after a while. Maybe a good acrylic. The gloss tends to dull off a little anyway being exposed to everything under there.
Having said that though, i painted my leaves in a tough outdoor satin black (semi-gloss) acrylic. It is a tough flexible paint that is used on gutters and fascias of houses and for a touch-up paint on powder coated fencing.
I painted mine black too.

Well that beaut pic tells it all -'natural finish'. 6 leaves too -must be a 6 pack or Hemi car? No anti-sway bar that i can see though.

440 4bbl with AC. Same as my car.
You didn't get a rear sway bar on many 1970 challengers except the T/A.

I feel ok now.!
Doesn't matter how good you think you have done your own car's underbody, when you see a perfect reference resto like that, it pales into insignificance... well mine does anyway.
My 318 71 auto/air only has 4 leaves! My Rallye 340 also has 4. My Valiant Hardtop which is the same as a 69 Dart has 5 leaves. Which cars then had the unequal leaf number? Thought it was Hemi/6Pack TrackPak...Was it 5 and 6, or 6 and 7? And did all 440 get the 6 leaves? Or only 440 auto? Confused now, will have to do some more reading.

Yes, leaf springs were origonally bare. A good color to use is Seymours Stainless steel and then spray a matte clear over it. From a short distance away it really does look like bare steel.
FYI...I bought two cans of Eastwood steel paint.(I can't remember if that is Spray Gray or Detail Gray...whichever one is the lighter color)I also heard about the Seymour paint and bought two cans of it. It turns out that they are the same exact color. I think Eastwoods stuff IS the Seymour paint...just in different packaging. The Seymour paint is quite a bit cheaper than Eastwoods also.

Dave that picture you posted up there with the show quality undercarriage...i was just looking at that picture again as i am doing my springs. I think they have put the very bottom leaf the wrong way around? All the zinc interliners are facing forward except the last one. The Hemi and HP440 (from my 71 Service manual) had 6 full leaves on the LHS and 5 leaves and 2 half leaves on the RHS. Both half leaves forward of the axle.
Unless that interliner has the hole in the middle and is longer than the others -which have the hole set back and all point forward. It looks to me like a half leaf that is pointing backwards. Got me beat.

Sorry I just saw this.
The photos are not of a "show quality car". The car was an unrestored survivor that was VERY carefully documented in EVERY detail as it was taken apart. Although it is restored, EVERYTHING on the car is exactly as this one came from the factory. Nothing has been put on the wrong way around unless it was done that way when it was built.
