1970 Dodge Challenger R/T
Stock 383c.i. V8 - 34yrs old - low output
Automatic
Bought it at the '04 All-Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle / Sold for $17,500.
It make's alot of noise, but doesn't seem to go anywhere.

It's been a while since I updated this thread, but here's the word.

As of 9/20/05, new plans are underway for the Challenger. A 512ci Hemi will replace the tired 383. The motor is being built for turbocharging. Currently, plans for a twin turbo setup are on the horizon.

The chassis will be fitted with a roll cage, and plenty of other modifications. Im going to keep the project under wraps until it's finished.

Board member Hans is doing the same sort of thing to his car right now. You guys should talk.

Turbo 426? NO! Don't do it!

Turbos are old hat and don't work as well as the new belt driven Prochargers. Stick a Procharger on it and make as much power as you want.

Yea, ATI has been making some good stuff. They have their act together. I know a bunch of guys getting Impalas (LT1 small block) with 396 strokers and ATI D1SC prochargers on top. Those things are built tough. Lots of boost too :)

About keeping the rear seat while mini-tubbing it... I can tell you you'll need to make the rear seat about 8" shorter (4+4) to install it between the tubs. Then (with the inner fender located at the chassis) you can get away with a tire about 30x13.5, maybe 31x14 when pushing it to the limit.

When you gonna built your engine, stroke it while your at it. A stroker kit isn't that much more expensive comparing to a std stroke rotating assembly. And go for a procharger yeah...the best supercharger at the moment! Also, when building a hemi with a 'bad ass' manifold you will need to create a scooped hood. My Barton intake along with a dominator carb will already stick through the hood, not talking about a air filter yet...

Maybe a stupid Q, but when you plan on such a 'I need to modify everything' project wouldn't it be cheaper to get a challenger with a non matching 318/3-speed or something...? Seems to be a to nice of a challenger to cut up? (man, is this me telling this  )

Well, after taking a look at what some people think of turbochargers. Im going to keep this project under under wraps until it's finished. I will confirm the following though...

It will not be a full-on drag car
It is going to be turbocharged by one of the following models seen here...
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/thumper.html

From what I was told right now by a Mopar specialist here in DE, that Larry Shepard (Veteran Mopar Performance Engineer) has been turbocharging big block Hemi V8's for years, and has had no problems with them. We are looking at giving him a call to see what he has to say about our project and perhaps building us a Turbo Hemi. While a F-2 Procharger will not fit on a BB Hemi due to the massive head size, a turbocharger will. Im sorry guys, but the turbochargers have me sold.

For example, a Garrett GT-60 (141mm) turbocharger can support up to 2400hp. However, at that point you will be into the 7's or 6's in the 1/4 mile. But Im not going to put a turbocharger that big onto a Hemi motor.

Everyone is just going to have to wait until the project is finished.

Lack of torque won´t be any problem, that is for sure. :s006: Good luck!
Don´t forget to add some strength to the body. It will need it. :s009:

Hey I never said you can't make lots of power with the turbo. The procharger is just better at it.

As for the procharger not fitting on the hemi. Well I am not too sure about that.....but I do know a man that will know for sure.

Yep. That is indeed a F2 procharger Andy Neal is fitting on his 525 Ray Barton Hemi. This one is going in his Dart which is a lot smaller under the hood than a Challenger!

It can be done, but there won't be a 'bolt on' deal available for a hemi. You have to fabricate some brackets etc. yourself when going for a procharger. Only, there's no need to turbo a hemi if you wanna go fast, it can be done N/A.

Having said that, I know myself, and somewhere in the futere I like to put a roots type supercharger on my 528. I know, not the most efficient out there but definetly the best looking one available... in my opinion though...

Keep us updated...

Yeah Trev-D (MMA club member) is making (really neat!) billet engine plates to mount the engine and procharger at the same time. Very cool.

I agree about not needing any forced induction on a street/strip Hemi. Andys old Hemi in his Dart was a 9 second car. How fast do you want to go?

I love the old blowers Hans. I mean REALLY love them. I was brought up on a diet of blown slingshot diggers and early funny cars. My dream one day is to have a blown hemi hot rod. But the Chally would have to go first so that kind of holds me back from doing that.

I already understand that the car needs chassis work. If she were to put out over 1000rwhp with no tuning. The car would snap in two when you go WOT. She is indeed going to be put into a chassis shop for the Hemi prepping.

So it is possible to put a F-2 on a Hemi? Guess I was wrong.

As for how fast? Im aiming for low 8's in the 170mph range.

My father wants the "bolt on deal" for a Hemi motor. Im telling him (and he understands now) that won't be happening anytime soon. Right now the Thumper T-105 idea is gone. Im going to give Larry Shepard a call and get some stat's on a 426 Hemi's airflow, and what size turbo's would be proper for it (or else the Hemi could over-spool'em, leading to a premature death).

As for tire size outback, Im looking at either 30x13.5's or 29.5x10.5's

I will keep you updated. But Im not going to update with pics. Im guessing it will be a year or two before the car is finished.

Very cool indeed and I wish you good luck with it.

Andy says that little 414-inch Fords are making 2400hp so a real engine like a hemi should be making a lot more.

Or how about a twinturbo... The Haze, 440 2turbo Charger runs low 8's on pumpgas with it... You won't need 2000+ hp to accomplish low 8's by t he way... There was a thread on the Moparts forum of a hemicuda figuring out to install a procharger and he stated that, yet, there ain't no bolt on deal for it. Maybe it will be released later on? Don't know about that...

About Andy's Dart Dave, the Hemi's out and sold (already a new one in the works) The nascar smallblock with the procahrger on top is installed in the Dart for now. Wouldn't wanna change I have to admit. I'd rather have a hemi in it...
