Some of the emblems are off the car right know. This is a real Hemi R/T with Fiberglass hood and spoilers. It looks the way it rolled out of the factory. Patrick

The car had 1 repaint around 1985. Its a fair number 2 car up close. Those are the correct size tires. It does look awesome in person. Patrick

Q: Were all of the fibreglass hoods painted black from the factory (like the T/A hoods) or could you choose to have them body coloured?

I will soon post pictures of the engine compartment. It needs some work. The correct black matted valve covers come with the car. It has chrome ones on it now. I'm still researching the history of the car. Early 80's owner owned this one and many other hemi-powered cars. Including a 1968 Barracuda factory Hemi drag car.

As far as the hood is concerned. The build sheet(which is in mint condition) and the fender tag confirm it came with the N94 Fiberglass T/A hood. I believe it came in black like the T/A's. Patrick

Very cool. This is only the fourth 1970 non-T/A Challenger that I have heard of so far with the T/A hood. I would love to know the codes if possible so I can compare it to the others I have heard of just for curiousities sake.

I do not have rubbings or pictures of these tags, but I do have copies of the broadcast sheets for two of them. The tag info as it appears below is as reported to me, so unless I make a typo, any errors are not mine. ? marks appear where the info is hard to read.

What is interesting about all 4 of these cars is the expected build dates. All very late in the year. Also after the production of the T/A's. I was told the Fiberglass hood was available for all Challengers. However Chrysler did a lousy job marketing them in their sales literature so no one ordered it. It didn't get catch on until some people saw them on the T/A's. Then a handful were ordered on non-T/A's. I don't believe it was made specifically for the T/A's, but was part of the T/A package. This is what my research tells me. Any thoughts? Patrick

Hi Patrick,
The hood was made specifically for the Challengers racing in the Trans Am ciruit, so it had to be on the street version of the T/A to homoglate it for the race cars. It had to be a regular production part for them to use it on the race cars, so it was made specifically with that use in mind.

It did prove to be very popular with drag racers as well.

I know this question was asked of Barry, but I would like to answer it if I may. My understanding is if the car was ordered with the N94 option, it came from the factory with the Black Fiberglass T/A hood. They were not painted anything other then black. My Hemi is fitted with the oval Hemi air-cleaner with rubber seal like whats on the six-pack T/A cars.

I know if I'm incorrect, Barry will post the correct answer. He knows alot more then I about these hoods. Patrick

I agree, all T/A hoods were painted black by the factory, (organisol) weather they were installed on T/As or other Challenger models. I have not heard of any that were body color per se, but they did use the hoods on black cars, but the hood is not glossy like TX9 black.

I wanted to share some information. I just spoke to the original owner who ordered the car back in 1970. He worked for Vissing Dodge in Jeffersonville Indiana and ordered the car for drag racing. He raced the car at numerous tracks in Indiana and Kentucky. I also so spoke to Mr. Vissing @ Vissing Dodge and he remembers the car. Only Hemi Challenger he sold in 1970. The original owner said the T/A hood really helped lighten the front end, sucked in alot of air and help with quarter mile performance. He and I will hopefully speak again soon. Thanks for reading.

Quite a success story this. It is amazing to me that this sort of thing can still happen these days. There must still be other great cars like this out there. I wish I could find one!

I know of a Hemi Challenger here in Sweden that has been stored for the last 20 years or something. I wish I get the opportunity to see it in real life one day. The owner seems to be very aware of its value (a collector)so the chances to buy it cheap are very small, I guess.

I know of a T/A that sold new at that dealership as well. It sold rather late, 8-10-70, so it was probably on the lot when your car came in. The next time you talk to Mr. Vissing, can you ask him if he has any vintage photos of the dealership? I would love to see them if he does.
