Sorry Dave, the 'tootsie' roll is nothing but 60 grit abrasive cloth wrapped in a roll approx 1/2 inch thick and 1-2 inches long. I didnt use a carbide/High speed steel cutter because the alluminum is removed very quickly and the pushrod opening is far down into the head and with a 6" arbor and a mini-grinder I was able to quickly achieve the clearance in about a 1/2 hour with both heads laid out.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SAI-260001/?rtype=10 The tapered abrasive rolls are pointed allowing you to get at the pushrod hole opening. The straight cylindrical rolls are great for getting at the pushrod cut into the intake port and removes material fairly quickly but not so much that you 'break' into the port itself. I then cut thick plastic into 4" long strips 1" wide. I miked them with a Vernier Caliper and they showed .030 thick. I then used these strips as a 'guage' checking for clearance. Either they will 'wrap' them selves against the pushrod and port and slide down or they are too thick and wont do that. I would remove material and re-mount the heads after thoroughly cleaning them with high pressure water and alluminum detergent soap. Blow dry with high-pressure air and re-mount them, torque the head bolts and re-check. It was tedious but I only wanted to remove enough material for clearance because I may heavily port the intakes someday. As I said previously, I used longer hyd. roller lifters, Custom made 1.6 Ratio Stainless Roller Rockers, and I'm sure this affected the angle, albiet very slightly, into the head. Flat tappets with a different Rocker system might have a different angle, either way this abrasive kit or one like it should get the desired results.

Thanks Eddie. I thought that was what you meant. I can order those from a UK supplier. 60 grit is hard to find (most start at 80) but I did find one place that sells them.
Thanks mate.

Cool, Dave, 60,80 doesnt matter much get what you can find easily. Also when I stated 'mini-grinder' it was Air Powered. The mini-electric ones arent powerful enough.

I only have an electric drill. It will do.
I ordered the rolls. Should be with me by tomorrow afternoon.

Finally getting somewhere. All pushrods now clear. Heads are painted and installed. Rockers adjusted. England beat Scotland in the Rugby. A perfect day.

Losing your scrum half to injury is probably not ideal at this stage of the tournament, eh Wayne ?
C'mon England !!!

I think we have a decent enough squad to pick up the slack. It will be a great game.
I have to say despite England having a doubtful past few years they put serious work in during tournys....and they really do turn up when it really matters....

Glad to see it done Dave. Are you gonna take it out for a test drive? Sad to see it go
I predict you will have about 25 more HP and a bit more torque.

I will take it for a few test drives mate because I promised the new owner it will be running perfectly before he collects it on the 2nd April.
I was due to fire the engine up by the end of tomorrow but i just broke a spark plug and there is no way i am going to find one locally. Things keep going wrong like this. But that has always been the story with this car (and aftermarket parts in particular). I will not be sad to see it go.

Be interested to see if you can see/feel any improvement with the Source heads
can't be pleasant working on that car now.......just a labour, not a labour of love, shame

Except for the one spark plug I broke (Doh!) the car is ready to fire up now. The replacement plug might turn up tomorrow if I am lucky. Had to get it mail order because the parts places around here are crap.

The new spark plug came, it fired up. The timing was right on the button, the fuel mixture was right, everything was right.
Just had to take a little oil out of the engine because I had over filled it slightly.
I did about 20 miles total in it today and it is running very strong. Burns rubber when you floor it at any speed below 40mph. Sounds like a dragster. Engine noise seems louder. Ally heads must transmit more noise.
I fly off to Holland tomorrow for a few days (nothing exciting - just work) so cannot play with the car more for now.
When i get back i have to look at fixing the fuel sender because it has stopped working again. Needs a quick shot of paint on the trunk floor too as it got scratched from the tools a lot at the Nats last summer.
Apart from that (and a wash) it is ready to go to it's new owner.

They do Dave, can you remember when I got mine? I spent a week looking for a leak on the headers. Very clattery.
It does make it sound 'tuned' though.

I know the new owner is going to love it, Dave. My heart bleeds for you, right now. You'll get another when the time is right but, it'll take a lot to get it as nice as this one.
Thinking of you, my brother.

Alex (the new German owner) came for the Challenger this afternoon.
He is a really nice guy. Brought his dog too and our two dogs got on very well indeed.
I have felt very sad today seeing it go. But it is for the best.
I hope Alex does not have any problems with the car and that it gives him years of pleasure.

Elvis has left the room.
And the Challenger has left the UK. Touched down on Belgium soil and on the road to Germany.

A message from Alex - the new owner;
Helo Dave,
two Buddies have found each other
Today I went to the Dodge Dealer here in my town to get infos for my registration. They were soooo exited ;-!! The boss stopped working and called all employees in and they looked at the Beast for about 20 minute. The whole shop (20 people) stopped working!! They liked the car so much.
Im so proud you gave the car to me. Your spirit wil always be with the car. I show everyone who the maker was ;-.)
Here is a pic: The Beast with its new friend
