AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The Dodge Challenger SE Rallye will add more retro style to the 2009 Challenger lineup with a throwback hood and deck lid stripes, a chrome fuel door and a set of 18-inch wheels with all-season performance tires. The stripe treatment delivers both dominant and accent stripes in two different colors.

Dodge is likening the Rallye to the Challenger R/T Classic, except the newest car uses the 3.5-liter V6 rather than the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The big mechanical change comes with the five-speed automatic transmission. Formerly reserved for V8 models, the five-speed automatic will now be used on all Challenger SE models in place of the old four-speed auto. Output is the same as in other V6 Challengers at 250 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.

Fuel economy for the Challenger SE Rallye is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Production of the Challenger SE Rallye begins in April. Dealers are now taking orders, with prices starting at $26,490.

Inside Line says: The five-speed automatic is a welcome change but doesn't make up for the lack of a manual transmission on the V6. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
