				1971 Challenger survivor

Hi all. I can´t find the proper thread but I know that I have promised pic´s of a 71 survivor in my neighborhood. Hood and one rear fender has been repainted but the rest is factory paint. One owner since 1974 or something. Not many Challengers with the door edge protectors still mounted, eh? I have not seen the car with my own eyes yet but I am really longing for that moment. The front bumper must have been replaced, or? The holes are not correct, are they?
Btw; A correct right hand mirror is on its way.

Thanks for posting Christer, It's very very nice man! Yeah that square funky looking mirror has got to go! What holes are you pointing out? Didn't the bumpers change for 71? The 70's had no slots cut into them I think. Otherwise they look correct to me. Dave would know for sure!

BTW, I learned something, I didnt know the factory had door edge protectors as an option, cool

If you extract the last pic you will see the holes more clearly. I assume they are for the bumper protectors.

				Bumpers in 1971 were complicated.....
The front bumper was carried over from the previous year until Feb. '71 when a new bumper was used. How it differs i don't know.
This then had to be changed again in June due to new safety requirements. But it is not clear to me if the cange was to the bumper or the mounting brackets.
Elastomeric front and rear bumpers became available for the Challenger in '71 but only in four colours. These were B5 blue, Y3 yellow, V2 hemi orange and, depending which reference you read, either C7 plum crazy or J6 green.
From April '71 all painted bumpers were cancelled except for Y3 yellow for some reason.

Are you are referring to the 2 slots? I believe that these are for the bumper jack. The 70 bumper jack has a "C" shaped adapter to hook under the bumper in a notch on the bottom edge of the bumpers. If my memory serves me right, which it often doesn't the 71 adapter had a hook that fit into these slots. The front bumper guards bolted on where the bumper bolted to the inner part of the bumper brackets.
Great looking car. Would love to see some detailed engine pics.

 Yup, complicated is the word

It feels like an area where we have some questionmarks to straighten out. I have not given the bumpers much attention until now.

One oddity with this car is that it only has front torque boxes. The rear torque boxes are missing. Any comments?
(A guy I trust very much has told me this. He knows very well how the torque boxes looks like.)

It shouldn't have torque boxes at all so maybe the front ones were put on by mistake and this was pointed out before the rears could be added?
Only the 440+6, hemi and convertibles got torque boxes in 1971. There was no 440 4bbl offered that year.
I assume this one is a 340 or 383?
Also my car came with the steel door edge protectors. But one of them got damaged in 1993 when I had a crash so I removed them.

So from all this, the slots are correct for 71 only. The door edge protectors were a factory not a dealer option,(interesting, first time I've heard that one), the rubber guards Christer described,(skinny ones), were also 71 only, the elastomeric was a 4 colour choice for a brief time in 71, discontinued after 71. All correct?

71-74 I think.
The door edge protectors were a factory not a dealer option,
Protection Group (A05)
Vinyl insert body side moulding, bumper guards (f&r w/rubber inserts), door edge protectors.
Probably also available separately from dealers.
the rubber guards Christer described,(skinny ones), were also 71 only,
Nope.

Right!

....and in 1970? The T/A, the 383"+4, the 440"+4 cars also got the torque boxes, right?

Nothing wrong with your car either, Hezzel. Have you owned it for a long time? When was that photo taken?
Hezzel wrote:Where in sweden is this car Christer?
On the front side of Sweden - The west coast.

I won´t tell you because it is
NOT for sale.

(Partly a joke: See the answer above.)
Btw; Today I realized that there are at least THREE ´71 Barracudas in different garages not far from where I live. Long live the e-bodies!

The door edge protectors and front/rear bumper guards were also available as seperate factory options. The code for the door edge guards is M05. The front/rear bumper guards is M85.

She's not in Sweden anyway, she's currently working in France, doing what any 33-year-old blonde should : learning to spell (or maybe she's just shuffling the letters for "Wheel Of Fortune" on TV).

Never the 383.
Well. You should never say never in this game but the 383 did not officially get them.
I think the T/A got them? Can't remember.

.......or trying to get out of her own car without help from anyone else? (See Blondestar:

I think so too. A couple of years ago I took a closer look at the only (?) Panter Pink T/A in Sweden and I am fairly convinced that it had the torque boxes. Wouldn´t it be very odd if the T/A:s did NOT get them? It is a car who really need them if you ask me. On the other hand I am very puzzled that the T/A:s did not get the rallye cluster as standard with the very useable tach! (Yes, I know that the tachs are not very accurate but they sure are better than nothing.)
