Nostalgia Drags at Shakey

Postby Adrian Worman » 22 Jun 2013 19:44

We have a cracking event tomorrow at Shakespeare Raceway just outside if Stratford on Avon, where that William Shakespeare was born, so famous we even have a drag strip named after him :D
It's a proper nostalgia Gasser circus, a rwyb and a show for rods, customs etc.
Gonna flog the Chally up the strip and see how my few recent mods have paid off............ aiming for 13 dead on treads and the exhaust hooked up
Oh and make time to post up some cool pix (of skimpy dressed tattooed hot rod chicks) :s003:

Sadly the local beaver didn't even bare their teeth in that weather, don't blame em

The old flippers are cars resurrected from the 70's, I remember them from the show circuits and mags as a kid.
Check out the SuperGas LandRover  ........only in England

There will be another event at SantaPod in a couple weeks, its called Dragstalgia and its big......... got me fingers crossed for sun, skirt and a fire up lane packed with old time gassers and hot rods

I love nostalgia drags. There used to be one yearly outside of St Louis (Wentzville) back in the 80s-90s before nostalgia became popular. The headliners that came over the years were some pretty big names; Arnie the Farmer, Ronnie Sox, Don Gartlis etc. Would spend hours roaming the pits then go watch the runs. My favorites were the Altereds, screaming down the track sideways!!

Just been sent this link to the promod crash the afternoon before I went.
I saw the car reassembled by Sunday mornin, the mental German team that run it tried to get it thru scrutineering and were quite rightly told to piss off home

No, nothing here in St Louis. Wish there was though.
Gateway (www.gatewaymsp.com) was bought by a local racer and has been re-opened (yeah!) His business model is to rely on local/regional events instead of the way Dover Enterprises did of having a major NaSCAR event or two and forget about the track the rest of the year. So far it appears to be working. A lot of drag racers had given up as they it wasn't worth it to have to drive to Indy, Memphis or KCIR (now closed also) or further to race. SCCA is back too. Bikes are now racing on the roadcourse also (MCRA).

He did visit the UK once. More of an exhibition rather than serious racing. Can't remember how he did. Probably not great.

The "big name" US Racers usually struggle without full team support and lots of spare engines etc. Running milder engine tunes in cars they have already replaced with a newer chassis back in the US.

Don Prudhome and Gene Snow are two I have seen race here. And there was that guy who crashed and broke his back. Never walked again. What was he called again??? :?

Ah! It came back to me. Darrell Gwynn broke his back here. The chassis on his car snapped I think?

Yeah Dave, Darrell Gwynn is the guy who broke his back. He's in a wheelchair now and runs and/or is the spokesman for a powerchair foundation that gives powerchairs to kids. He brings cars to the Barrett-Jackson auctions for his charity. Saw one of his dragsters (actual race winning car) go over the blcok three times in one auction and bring in over 3 million $$$USD. The first winner gave it back to be auctioned again as did the second bidder. Pretty cool
