Mopars at the Strip 2005

Postby Doug444UT » 04 Apr 2005 17:13

I went down to Las Vegas this weekend for the Saturday events. Didn't take my '74 as it's not quite ready for an 800 mile round trip and the gas alone would probably have cost almost $200! Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so you'll have to visualize.

Saw lots of nice Challengers, 'Cudas and B-cars. Only 1 Charger Daytona and no Superbirds. Quite a few hemi cars, and they claimed to have 7 of the 11 (I think) Hemi Challenger convertibles on-site. There was one tent with a "Survivor" banner, yet several of the info placards infront of the cars (mostly Hemi 'Cuda convertibles) had info about the car's restoration  , so I'm not sure what constituted "survivor" there.

While cruising the car show section I saw a green Challenger roll by with "LitemUp" on the licence plate, but never got a chance to speak to the owner...I assume he was our very own.

Challengers made a good showing on the drag strip as well, with a couple running in the 11's and 10's. They even had 2 of the Hemi convertibles run head-to-head and they both hit right at 100 mph for the quarter-mile (can't remember the e.t.'s), though they didn't warm their tires properly (probably didn't want to hurt their tires or get sticky black stuff on the paint!).

Saw a black '73 340 car that had had a Hemi transplant that they were asking $48k for, and a shaker 440-6 billboard 'Cuda with an asking price of $148K  !

Saw a couple 340 shaker cars ('Cuda and Challenger), but not sure if they were original or not.

They also had the 2006 Charger there and would even let you test-drive one, including a Daytona version! The line was WAY too long for me, so I passed, but I'll be honest it just didn't LOOK like a Charger to me.

All in all, a fun time though.

Shame no photos. :(

$200 in fuel costs to go 800miles eh? It would cost you three or four times that much same car same distance in the UK. Lucky dogs you Americans.

Here's current prices from Finland. I also converted prices to USD and calculated USD per-gallon-price. I don't know current US prices, but found 95E equivalent price from Florida dated 31.3.2005 and that was 0,482 EUR/litre.

Prices collected from 452 stations
1 USD = 0,778693 EUR
1 EUR = 1,28433 USD
1 litre = 0,264172051 US gallon
1 US gallon = 3,7854118 litre

95E: EUR 1,145 - 1,191 / litre
98E: EUR 1,173 - 1,220 / litre
Diesel: EUR 0,927 - 0,965 / litre

95E: USD 1,470 - 1,530 / litre
98E: USD 1,506 - 1,567 / litre
Diesel: USD 1,191 - 1,239 / litre

95E: USD 5,565 - 5,792 / gallon
98E: USD 5,701 - 5,932 / gallon
Diesel: USD 4,508 - 4,690 / gallon

Just as a point of reference, I was using $2.50/gal. US as the avg. price for premium unleaded here in the Utah/Nevada area. And estimating I'd get 10 mpg with my '74 360 (just a guess at this point). Looks like it'd only cost you blokes twice as much, if I read the numbers right.

Didn't realise gas prices had gone up that much!

In the UK we pay almost $6.00/gal US for our cheapest fuel but it is better quality stuff than your cheapest stuff. 95 RON I think?

Most of the cost of the fuel is pure tax.

Well they do ship gasoline from Finland to USA. I think it goes to California. Not enough local supply there that could fullfill their strict regulations they say.

I only saw your car as you drove in and then got side-tracked by the A-bodies. My buddy had a '70 Duster 340 4-spd in his youth and we spent some time checking them out and then went to watch the races. Sad to say I forgot all about looking up your car. I'm sure I saw it again later that afternoon. Did you take a spin down the track? What class were you entered in? I plan to be there next year, driving the Challenger if it's ready. If not, I'll trailer it. Pulling a trailer with my '04 Hemi Ram 2500 I'll spend the same amount of $$ on gas, maybe less!
