You need to ground that onto something a little better than a painted panel mate, you'd need to scratch the surface down to good clean metal to get a reading.
Do what Dave says and do a continuity test, have you got a circuit tester?

I sat in the drivers seat and turned the ignition to on and I had the boot end of the cable that connects to the sender with a nail in it and touched it off the door arch but nothing moved on the gauge.

Yes you need to touch it to good bare metal. It's only 5 volts so needs a good contact.

If the gauge does not work then you have proved the sender is not the fault. Do you see that?

The fault has to be the gauge itself OR the connection between it and the boot at the end. There is a connection along this wire at the bulkhead connector.

I got it to work when I was over there and finding a good ground spot was difficult but I did get to work trust me on this I saw it with me own eyes it works

He just needs the correct connector for the end of the purple wire to the sending unit you have the harness also I sent it to ya off my chally

I connected the boot end to the sender and nada bud, still working to find the issue

Ok since we can assume the gauge works or did,

you need to check connections,
since you were in there changing things out you may have compromised a connection somewhere

The guage work guys, I did the test and needle moved so from the guage to the boot end of the cable work so it must be a faulty sender correct?

Ok so I have idea, I found the original sender I had before Dave sent me an old one he had lying around, now since I know from the gauge back works so I was thinking that maybe the connection from the boot to the sender is poor so I tested it on the old sender and its a perfect fit and it stays on nice and tight, however when I connect the boot end to the sender in place its not as tight infact a bit loose so Im not sure its getting a good connection, does this make sense guys, maybe the boot and sender are just not the right fit and the connection is not good enough.

Hold on for a bit Ade.......Im going to swap out the one I have in there and try the old one again just for shits n grins and Drew would say lol.....
