i have a 70 challenger with the ac/heater box. i was wondering if anyone knows if the sell a after mark it of used heater box the one with out the ac hook ups or some were that i can buy the kit that has the ac compressor and lines and everything except the box. does that make sence??

Are you looking for a heater core? If so Modine still makes nice originals along with a good 3 core main radiator. I think I paid around $90 and $300 respectivly back in 03.

I think i know what you want now, it might be what i am looking for too. I have a 71 Chal with A/C. I want to ditch the whole A/C unit and just run a non-aircon heater box. I think you will find it is a big job, a good used heater box for a Chal are quite rare and expensive on Ebay. Plus the Driver side fresh air plenum is welded up (on mine anyway) so it means cutting that plate out. Then have to get the fresh air ducting.

It is not just the box that is different between AC and non-AC cars. The whole bulkhead is different.

i have the ac box that came with it and i have it total guted it i want to get ride of the ac all to geather cause i dont have the pump but i want to find the hole box is there any other car that i can still it out of

Steal it out of - any Non - A/C Chal or Cuda would have a heater box, you might be able to make fit, but now that Dave says the firewall is different - maybe the heater hole is bigger or smaller. I'm sure it could be done though, and since the heater unit is not highly visible, it wouldn;t matter if there was a few odd things here and there.

Yeah, that's quite a show stopper. Nothing like a little internal bodywork for your added enjoyment. :rage:

I think A/C is a really good thing though. Out here the temperature regularly gets to 310 degrees K. in the summer. :wink:

Without A/C it does limit how often she gets out. The heater works great though so winter is mostly wide open.

I removed the AC from my car. I also removed the heater matrix and everything else.

I only kept the fan and the air box that you speak of but I fixed the flaps so they only blow air onto the windshield and the ducting for the windshield is the only ducting I kept.

The holes for the pipes through the bulkhead I blanked off with thin ally plate on the inside fixed to the box.

It saves a lot of weight.

In the UK where I live if it only hot for a couple of months and I can put up with no AC. Spring and Autum are not cold enough for a heater and I never use the car in the winter anyway.

We using the Kelvin temp scale now are we Jon? :lol:

the a/c components i weighed came out to just over 100 lbs, and yes im an american so i dont have the conversion tables to kilos,
i also had a sears after market a/c system that someone installed a long time ago that is alot of weight to get off the car and especially off the front :thumbsup:

yeah but the summers here in utah usa we get about 95 -110 from may to august so i would really like it alot and i am not really worried about the weight very much because i just want it to be a nice and comfertable

Wear slippers and smoke a pipe while driving Granddad.

I think one of the AC units made for Hot Rods would fit the bill. Then you would get a complete system that would probably bolt up under the dash once the stock system was out of the way.

Can anyone comment on how well the factory A/C components perform?

Never experienced it just the windows and vents open. Really kinda curious now.

I don't think it would be very hard to put together the factory A/C. You can get new brackets from Buchillon(not spelled right)Performance. I also got a new "Sanden" style compressor from them too for when I put A/C on a big block Dakota. New lines can be made up by most parts stores or A/C shops as long as you have the origonal fittings. I'm pretty sure Year One would have a condenser/evap for sale.

It will probably cost a good deal of money to get it put back together. If you don't want to spend the money...why not just use the heater box you have? The firewall is different(non-A/C boxes have the blower motor mounted from the inside...A/C systems have the blower motor mounted from the engine comp) so even with the non-A/C box, it will still look like the car came with A/C.

Yeah the system is SO heavy. Not only that, it clogs up the entire engine bay. Don't worry, i'm an Aussie, but i still like to think in pounds when working on the USA made car.

Air con is great on a trip in very hot weather, but where i am in city driving, its stop=start and i would rather the car not get stressed out and me be hot rather than the other way around.

That's what i was dreading. however i was always considering something along the lines or what Dave did, so now he has described it, it sounds easier. However i would still like the fresh air ventilation. Those pull knobs under the ashtray let in nice volumes of air.

BTW. 310deg does sound rather hot. Must be over 40C. That's our summer.
