				Bypass hose fitting

I'm putting in a new radiator and while I'm at it, getting new hoses etc. Someone said that I should change the bypass hose fitting also but that one is stuck like a rock! I'm afraid I will make too much damage if I try to remove it. What's your opinion? Does it matter that much if I change it or not? Should I just put on a new hose and not worry about it?

Unless it is really screwed up I wouldnt worry about it. Just clean it up, make sure there is no corrosion and dirt on the fitting.

Yes they are a pig to get out. I ended up drilling and re-tapping the holes. It would have been easier just to buy a new pump housing. Which I did anyway recently.

Thanks, I don't think it looks really that bad, that's why I'm thinking of leaving it there. I'll get pictures of it after I've cleaned it up a bit. Oh yeah, one more thing. The actual fitting is smaller than the hose if you know what I mean...the intake is from a '68 340, while the rest of the motor is a '71 340. So the old bypass hose clamp had to be tightened a bit more on the fitting end. Looked a bit "swollen". Any tips on that? It worked fine although I got some comments on it...

The two hoses should be of two different dimensions, at least on the big-block cars. But you already knew that?

You must be talking about the heater hoses Christer. There's only one bypass hose as far as I know. And I think they're only on smallblocks too. Why, I do not know...

On the small block the thermostat and top radiator hose is on the intake manifold. The by-pass hose runs from the pump to the manifold. Water runs through the manifold to the heads. Totally unlike the big blocks.
I think that's right? Long time since I touched or even looked at a small block.

Here's a few pictures. Haven't cleaned much or anything, just started trying to get it off when I relized this thing is sitting there...
I think I'll just put on a new hose or do you have any other tips?

Just clean it up with a strip of emery cloth. Don't use any sealer. If it is smooth the hose clip will seal it.
