Heater Control Valve

I have a 1970 Challenger 318 that was a Florida car. They pulled the heater control valve and hoses out and I want to replace them since it is now an Indiana car.

I bought a NOS valve but looking at the Service manual doesn't tell me how to hook it up, although it does show the correct firewall and enging input/output connections.

I have put up a picture at http://www.ronspage.com/heatervalve.html with a pic of the valve. If you have any knowledge about connecting this thing please check out the page and use the email link there to get back to me.

All help greatly appreciated!!

I doubt that this scan will give you any new information, but it is worth a try....

HI..thanks for the scan but that is what I used from my manual to figure out the hoses. It just doesn't show the heater control valve connections/setup.

I am not sure it matters? It just opens and closes dosen't it? I would route the hoses to it so they look neat i.e. don't cross them over.

If it does matter and you have it wrong you will soon find out!

Aha... Let´s start somewhere!:
If I understand you right, you are not sure if it is the tubes marked A and B that are pointing into the engine bay (or if it is the tubes marked C and D)? Right? Is it really possible to mount them in both directions? I guess so because otherwise you wouldn´t have asked. And the flange on the heater valve gives no guidance about what is right and what is wrong? A better (a more sharp pic) would be useful. I think I will do another check in my books when I get home, but I am not sure that I can help you with this.

I thought his problem was which side is "hot" and which side is "cold"? :?

Hmmm, I've been out at the car with the valve. The comment about the flange got me thinking...duuuuhh! Since the valve mounts on the left fender well (looking at the engine from the front), that would make C & D face towards the firewall and A & B face front. Being logical, as I'm sure the engineers were  I would then guess C would go to the firewall inlet and D to the outlet. Following that thought the connections from the front of the valve are now apparent.

Plus the fact 3 tubes are 5/8 and one is 1/2 should help...And dave-r has it right, I'll soon know if they are right or not!
Thanks all!!! :)

It feels like you already have sorted out this questionmark, so maybe this post is unnecessary.

If you look at the scan below, doesn´t the view marked "383 and 440 cubic inch engines" and the view marked "View in direction of arrow A all engines", give you the information you need?
