Coolant Recovery Kit

Postby Mike Brown (Mikebmopar) » 21 Aug 2003 0:42

Greetings all. I just received the Coolant Recovery Kit from Year One. I am now trying to figure out where to put it. I would think it would work well on the passenger side. Of course, in the front is where the washer fluid tank goes. Just behind that are the horns. Have any of you installed such a kit and could give me some advice on where to place the tank? Any photos would be appreciated. Thanks!

Does this work with a standard radiator? I could use one of those myself!

On the radiator I have (I believe my brother replaced the original radiator) there is an overflow tube that just leaks out the overflow onto the ground. Not good! In fact, there is a clamp on the open end of the tube coming from just under the radiator cap which leads me to believe that this radiator once had an overlow tank. The kit was pretty reasonable. Something like $25.00 from year one.

I just looked it up. It is a bit ugly in the photo but it does exactly what I need. I use a "Be-Cool" ally radiator that is pretty trick and well made but after using the car every day for a week the water level is down to half in the radiator. That is with a 25lb cap.

I think I will order one myself and fit it too the drivers side of the rad. I have an overflow 'catch can' there I can remove and as the battery is in the trunk I have plenty of room.

Did you get the coolant recovery tank fitted Mike?

Can anyone explain how the system works? I want to make one if I can but don't understand how the water gets back into the radiator without the pressure cap on the overflow tank instead of the radiator??

Can someone do me a simple diagram or something so I can see what is going on?

the cap has a second seal on top of the radiator tank, when the coolant expands it goes to the overflow tank, when it cools the hose allows it to be pulled back into the radiator.

It turned out that just by chance i had the right sort of cap on the rad anyway. I just ran a length of pipe from the inlet on the top of the existing blue overfow bottle (photo above) down to within about a half inch of the bottom of it.

Now the water expands into the bottle and gets sucked back into the rad when it cools so it is always completely full.
