Here is one for you. Thanks to Jason for sending it in.

Anyone want to guess why it might be rare?

With the A63 Challenger Moulding Group option, the A66 340 Performance Package option and the A91 Western Sport Special Group option, you probably have the only Western Sport Special almost R/T almost SE 340 Challenger ever built. The only thing missing is the formal roof option but you couldn't get that as a separate option until 1971. Should the B34 read B43 for manual brakes? What I can't believe is that this is not a special order car - no Y39 on the tag.

Well according to a person with the initials G.G. there are no documented examples of a 340 WSS car although he says he did see one once but it did not have A91 on he tag. Can't have been many more like this made then. Rare indeed.

G.G. might have been to the circus and seen the elephant but he hasn't been and seen all of them. Does Jason have the build sheet for this car?

Nah. It was a car he was interested in buying because it sounded like a cheaper alternative to a T/A but then he lost touch with the owner. He kept the tag details and it was only later that he read on my site that there were no 340 WSS cars built. That rang a bell in his head and he dug out the details on the car he had kept. So it's still out there....and Jason thinks he might be able to track the guy down again if anyone was interested.

Can anyone tell me how many wss cars were built. I know 1615 wss cars were built but I don't know how many came with a 225, 318 or 340 or more, and what kind of transmissions were used, someone I know has a wss with a 318 and 904 trans. Was the split bench the standard for this type of car?

Just so everyone can see the answer.

145 with the 225 inch slant six engine.
1,066 with a 318 inch V8 engine.
381 with the 383 big block.
1 (maybe 2?) with the 340 performance package.

Lets just see what you got with this $199.50 package.

You received a Western Sport Special decal on the rear fenders, a vinyl roof, a woodgrain instrument panel applique, a remote control mirror, the rim blow steering wheel, sill mouldings, belt mouldings, front splash pan scoop, cowl moulding, rear taillight Astrotone applique, pedals dress-up kit, bumper guards w/rubber inserts and F78x14 inch white side wall tyres mounted on 14" Rallye wheels.

You could add this package to any LA built JH Challenger. The seats were not a part of it. So the seats in your car are whatever you (or the dealer) ordered in the first place.

Just to be even more clear (I forgot to say this!) all Challengers came standard with bucket seats. A bench seat you had to pay extra for and was available in the JH Challenger only.

I recently purchased what I belive is a
340 Western Sport Special. I first bought
the car to make a clone R/T but now I dont
want to tear it up until I gather more
info about it. Here are the fender tag numbers,

It sure looks like you have a 340 WSS. I don't have time to check all your codes right now but watch this space. Looks like you have a pretty rare car there. Just as good as an R/T but a lot rarer.

OK. Lets break the tag down for a start.

E55 - 340 8 cyl. 1 x 4bbl carb.
D32 - HD 727 Auto Trans
J - Challenger
H - Non-R/T
23 - Two door hardtop
H - 340
0 - 1970 model
E - Built in LA
134507 - 34507th car (various models) down the line that model year.

BL1 - Body paint (Beige)
H6T5 - (or is that T6?) Tan Vinyl bucket seats.
000 - Full door panels (will be tan too)
227 - Scheduled production date Feb 27th 1970.
157456 - dealer order number.

V1G - Gator Grain Vinyl top
A63 - Moulding Group A (std. on SE)
Includes belt moulding, front splash pan scoop, cowl moulding, rear Astrotone-painted applique.
A66 - Challenger 340 Performance Package
Includes 340 engine, E60x15 inch raised white letter tires, performance hood, HD brakes, HD suspension, Bumble Bee paint stripe (may be deleted), Scat Pack (bee) decal, wheel lip moulding is deleted.
A91 - Western Sport Special Group
Includes Western Sport Special decal, vinyl roof, woodgrain instrument panel applique, driver remote control mirror, rim blow steering wheel, sill moulding, belt moulding, front splash pan scoop, cowl moulding, rear Astrotone applique, pedals dress-up, bumper guards w/rubber inserts, F78x14 inch white side wall tyres, Rallye wheels.
C16 - Center console
C55 - Bucket seats

G34 - LH remote racing mirror
J54 - Performance (two scoop) hood.
M21 - Drip trough mouldings
M25 - Wide sill mouldings
M31 - Belt moulding
N41 - Dual exhaust

N42 - Chrome exhaust tips
N95 - Emission control
R11 - AM Radio
V1G - gator grain vinyl top
V9T - Tan (!) Bumble bee stripe (or is it stripe delete??)

26 - 26 inch radiator
END - End of tag codes

I hope I got these all right! (Someone check for me please!)

A few things stand out here. This is a very well optioned car. The persons ordering it knew what they were doing. Not sure about the color but you HAVE to restore this car. If that is a tan stripe on the rear (as I think it is) it is odd. For a start a tan stripe would be very rare. Plus it would not fit with the belt moulding as they overlap. Plus the WSS options call for 14 inch wheels but the 340 package calls for 15 inch wheels. My guess is the 15 inch wheels won.

You should not in theory be able to order the 340 package with this car because of the overlapping options among other things. Clearly (if this tag is real) it could be done though!

This is a very rare optioned Challenger you have here. Restore it PLEASE!

Wow! thats what I call service.
Thanks Jack and Dave for the
break down of the fender tag.
Unfortunately the gentleman I
purchaced the car from had
discarded the 340 engine,
painted the car yellow, dyed
the seats black and let it sit
in his garage half apart since
1986. The good news is that the
body is completely rust free,
strait and there is a 440 six pack
engine sitting in it now.
What to do?

If it was me I would find a 340 for it. The 340 is a very good engine for the Challenger with a modern cam it will make as much power as an original 440+6. Plenty of power and the car handled well with it. I would make it look as original as possible. This car is rarer than a Hemi Convertible. It will never fetch that sort of money in a million years of course. But restored it will fetch a lot more than if you put the 440 in. Plus you could easily get in a national magazine or two with a car as rare as this. That never hurts the re-sale value either!

Yeah I found that code after digging around some more. I knew we had discussed it somewhere on here before. Thanks Jack.

Well Scott. At the end of the day the choice is yours. If you wanted to build a 440 R/T clone then a 340 package car is not a bad place to start from. It would be a shame to do it to this one but a car is just a hunk of metal after all.

I know I would restore it. Don't know if the colour would ever grow on me though. Maybe it would.

I would have to agree that
this car should be restored,
however I just spent 4 years
finishing a car that I will
rarely drive do to its condition.
Also the color would never
grow on me either. My other
idea was the opposite of Jacks
sell the car to someone who
would restore it and keep
the engine. I am located
in the cars birthplace (LA)

I would love to see a nice color photo of that fender tag. Scott youve got possibly one of the rarest mopars in existence..do with it as you desire, but post some pictures please - such a rare car needs to be documented. I hope you like mopar magazines b/c im sure you'll be in one with that car.
