ON the VIN, what's the difference between D34 and D32? Big Block/Small Block?

D30 TorqueFlite auto 82 & up
D31 Ligt duty 904-A T-Flt
D32 HD A-727 Tor flite
D32 some years A-998
D33 A 999 Tor-Flite
D34 TorqueFlite Trans

Did you mean the VIN location? The VIN pad is in a little bit different locartion on the 904 vs. the 727, but they are quite similar.

If you are looking at a window sticker, it will show D34 for some cars even if it came with D32.

The Fender Tag. I was just wondering why some are listed D34 and other's are D32. I have a couple of book's but, they don't explain, or I missed something. Just wondering, that's all.

I thought D32 was the small block 727 and D34 the big block hence my answer. Or do I have that wrong?

As a general rule of thumb;

D34 is the 904 transmission, standard duty. You will only find it on 318 and /6 cars.

D32 is the 727 tranny, heavy duty and used on four barrel and sixpak small blocks, and the only automatic tranny for big block cars.

In my 73 Challenger. #'s matching 340 car. Tranny too! It's listed as D34. Definately 727 Torque Flight. No mistaking that from a 904. Maybe they got more generic with the #'s in the later Challenger year's.

Pat, The 904 is a 727 derived automatic but it fits smallblocks for light duty only. The 727 for small blocks is essentially a full sized 727 transmission with a small block bell for Heavy Duty performance apps as Barry and Dave stated above.

The Tranny fluid pan covering the valve body is the 727. The 904's have a smaller, more square pan. Also, I thought that the factory 340 car's only came with the 727. I'm starting to get confused.

It depends on the model year, 1970 & 71 340 cars - 727 only for the auto.

1972-74 340 cars - D34 as the base automatic transmission.

Dave. My simple question was. What is the difference with D34 and D32? I was wondering if it had something to do with Big Block/ Small Block? My code on my car is D34 but, it deffinately has a 727. Not one single doubt about it. It also match's the last six #'s on my VIN. I didn't mean to confuse everybody else. Just thought I would run it by you guy's. I know the factory did some funny thing's, and that sometime's the fender tag's and build sheet's were a little off.Christer and Barry: I saw your tranny I.D. help Christer, deffinate A727. I appreciate your input too Barry. When my nephew and I put in that Transpack shift kit from B&M, we knew it was a 727. I think Chrysler, or the worker's there did some add libbing on their project's. I'm going with a Typo on my fender tag. Thank's Guy's, Patrick

My own interpretation of this answer is that in 95% (or something) of the cases, D34=904 and D32=727. The rest of the cases are unclear. Am I right or am I wrong?

I was checking out this book" Original Challenger And Barracuda, 1970-1974",by Jim Schild. In the last page of the book, it cover's Transmissions for 72-74. It say's for those year's, D34 was the sales code for both Tranny's. The slant six and 318 V-8 used the A-904G or L version while the 340 and 360 V-8 used the A-727A. Although both Transmissions have similar internal parts and function, they are not interchangeable. Has anybody ever seen D32 on the fender tag of a 1972 through 1974 E-Body? I think it's a 72-74 norm.

Any of you 72-74 Challenger or Cuda' guy's have any input on this?

I do not know much about the coding for the 1972-74 years.

So, I looked at the fender tag photos I have on file and I did not see any with D32 for those years.

Interesting to think that Jim's book may have at least one thing right.
