1970 A66 340 Models

Postby 70 340 » 17 Aug 2007 10:21

Hello,
3 years ago I brought my first Challenger at the age of 21 and started to take a strong interest in the history and the option codes. So that is when I found on my option code plate A66, 1970 ONLY CHALLENGER 340 PERFORMANCE PACKAGE and ever sice then I have been trying to find production figers and what unique options were found on these cars. So if you own a factory A66 340 car I would love to hear from you.

Hi 70 340. I have an LA built A66 car. VIN JH23HOE...... I don't have the fender tag as it was misplaced in a repainting project.

I am pretty sure it came with these items as it's been in my possession since 1976: (Sorry don't know codes)

Metallic Brown paint with white vinyl top
Tan interior
15" wheels
.92 torsion bars
.875 front sway bar
Power front disc brakes
Rallye hood and dash
4-speed trans
Electric windshield pump with variable speed wipers
Manual steering
R/T badges on the fenders and trunk. (but not the grille)

What is your car equiped with? Pictures too?

Hi Jon,
You have owned that car for a long time, At this stage my car is undergoing a full ground up resto. I will put up some pics of it soon. I will get the full option tag info for you. Did you car come with a duel exhaust with chrome tips like the R/T's?

When I bought the car it had headers with turn downs before the rear axle. The rear valence did not have cut outs so I don't think it came with the chrome tips.

I was just out looking at some other sites to try and find some info to share but now a little more confused :? Did the 70 challenger come with a 340ci and also the A66 340ci or was it all the same and it was just called a 340 performance package and in 71 it was just E55?

Great information there 70 340. With so many options available where would a buyer start? I guess with his wallet. :?

Wish I had my fender tag to help out here. As an LA built car there is no broadcast sheets to be found either. The door tag says October 1969. (at least I saved that item). I installed the lighting package from another car so I know that was not on mine. When I get time I would like to create a best guess code list.

So how's your restoration project going? Are you going back to all original? Where was your car built?

Initially it was felt by Dodge that the 340 was not needed in the line-up because the 383 2bbl and 4bbl was available as the top engine in the JH and the 4bbl was the base engine in the JS.

For some reason (maybe because every other engine was available so what the hell?) they changed their minds and made it optional in the JH.

However the 340 was also sold as a strong performance engine in other models so they probably felt they needed to maintain its image.

So your 340 could only be ordered with HD suspension, brakes and the R/T hood.

On the production line they often got R/T badges as well even though Dodge did not produce a 340 R/T until the 1971 model year.

My resto is coming along, slow but getting there. The car was built in LA. The plan is to do a authentic restoration.

Possibly the A66 code (with the lighter engine) was intended to fulfill the roll of a low cost road car? IE: A less expensive Trans/Am.

How come 73 340's didn't come with the A66 code as well. I have factory sway's front and back and H.D.4 leave's in the back. :? Another way to beat the Insurance guy? :s002:

Hi Patrick,
The A66 code was done in 1970 only, from then on they were a rally with only the E55 (340ci) code. What other original options has your car got?

The whole Rallye Package. Interior cluster, 340 H.P. motor, 727 Trans., sway's, front&back. 3.23 sure grip. The only thing not for sure is the front fender scoop's with strobe stripe's because, the car was coded as V5X (side protective moulding's). As I hear, the factory wouldn't permit both together. I was told it is original. Maybe, a dealer ad on. Also has the light group but no A01 on the fender tag. Something they did in 73?:| Pat

I have been trying to find some info on the A66 cars and come across this

All 1970 challengers fitted with the 340ci were A66 cars with the exception to the challenger T/A

Production numbers for the A66 cars totaled 6,933 for the USA, export and canadian totals are not known, if any at all.

Darryl.

Very Nice, and rare A66 car. You do have your work cut out for you. But, when you are finished, it will be a work of art. I alway's loved the White, 70' Challenger.

Hi Jon - I thought I would help out with the codes you were not sure about. These come from Galen Govier's Code Book: V98 - Bumble Bee Sport Stripe DELETE, FK5 - Dark Burnt Orange Metallic, HGK5 - Are you sure it's not H6K5 ? H6K5 - High Trim Grade Vinyl Bucket Seats Dark Burnt Orange (note that I am assuming the color - I can only verify that the Trim Color K4 is Burnt Orange - thus I assume K5 to be a darker version)

It is H6K4, H6K5 is not a valid trim code.

No, it's just sitting right now. I had to redo my FM3/V6M car over first.
