production numbers for paint

Postby philljones404 » 23 Mar 2005 16:44

I have a 73 "super blue" challenger. I have been told that this is "tb3" on the fender tag, and that the color had to be custom ordered because the dealerships would not order them. I found the orignal owner of the car and asked him about it and sure enough he said that he had to order the car that color because there weren't any on the lot that color. Does any one know what the production numbers on these "Super Blue" cars? Or does anyone know about the custom order bit?

Although B3 was a Chrysler paint code used on Challengers in 70, 72, and 73 the 70 version was different to the 72/73 version.

When buying a new car you could just buy what the dealer had on the lot or you could order one to your own spec. Chrysler had a huge range of colours available.

You could even order a non-chrysler paint. When this happened you got 000 on the tag where the paint code should be.

Chrysler did not keep accurate records of which models were painted in what colours. They just noted that, say, 12% of all cars sold that year were painted THIS colour or THAT colour. They used these figures to decide what colours to offer the next year. As they didn't offer your colour the next year i would guess it was not a very common choice!

BTW "Super Blue" was called "Basin Street Blue" in '72.
