Z code

Postby Joakim » 31 Aug 2004 19:38

I know that the fifth digit in the VIN is for the engine: B, C, G, H, J and so on. According to the book Original Challenger and Barracuda 1970-1974 by Jim Schild there is also a Z – special order V-8. Does anybody know what kind of engine you would have to order to get Z? And did anyone do it?

Well, first of all, I have the book and it sucks, it is so full of errors that I felt bad for the author, the book never should have gone to print the way it did, it is very misleading.

I have only seen the fender tag codes for one "Z" code car so far, it was a 1970 Hemi Cuda that was ordered from Chrysler specifically as a race car. The "Z" engine code in this case reffered to an optional compression ratio, if I remember right it was 13.1
