71 Challenger Vin Codes

Postby Mopar Mark » 19 Sep 2001 0:56

I have recently purchased a 71 Challenger and have not completely figured out what the car is.

n98 r26 v5x 26 en2
25 l31 m21 n85 n95
c16 c55 g11 g33 h51 j25
v1x u a01 a62 a93 b51
ga4 l6x9 000 219 030982
e44 d31 jh23 g1b xxxxxx

1. The two codes I do not know are n98 and 25.
Does anyone know what these codes stand for?

2. Also, I have the rally gas cap. What code does this have or is it included in some other code?

3. From Daves website I believe I own a Challenger Deputy (A93 code), but the car is listed as JH23. Is this correct?

4. Finally, I have the buildsheet which lists the code Y14. The build sheet lists this as "sold car". Do I take this literally to mean the car was sold before it was made? What does this code actually mean?

Thanks for any and all help!

N98 is a 1971-only code for an exhaust emissions standards label and R26 is also a 1971-only code for an AM radio with a cassette player.

From my own web site; "The 1971 ordering guide lists it as JL21 but they are known to be stamped JH23".

Yes a "sold car" was one that had been specificaly ordered to that spec and a depost paid by a customer.

I don't know what the '25' is for. Is it stamped in the same way as the other codes? I would like to see a scan of the actual tag to see how it looks in real life but as it stands it is not a tag code.

The rallye gas cap was most likely added by a previous owner.

Hi mopar mark. I have a deputy as well. It almost has the same VIN tag. The only difference I have a 70's car. Mail me. 1002 cars with a 318 and 904 la trans were built.
