I decided to post this list here so you can see what information about production numbers is available.

The rare Challenger TOP FIVE are;

1) 1971 R/T Hardtop Hemi 4-speed with a sunroof. One known example.

2) 1970 T/A with sunroof. Again only one known but there might be another which knocks it into second place.

3) 1971 Hardtop 383 4-bbl with a 3-speed manual. Only one of these known but there were also two Deputy Coupes made like this.

4) N94 code T/A hood on a 1971 Challenger R/T. As discussed on this board only one known. There were at least four 1970 R/Ts built with this hood too.

5) Any 1970 Hemi Convertible. Nine USA shipped. Three Canadian. One or Two (?) export versions. Not as rare as any of the above but will fetch a million bucks each. Go figure.

Shaker hood production.

1970
164 x R/T Hardtop
15 x R/T SE
5 x R/T Convertible

1971
72 x Base Hardtop
11 x Convertible
141 x R/T

Total 1970 = 184
Total 1971 = 224
Grand Total = 408

Here are some production figures from Paul Z:s book. Maybe they can serve as a complement to your scans, Dave?

Yeah Thanks Dav great find, I knew all that but this just confirms my car is 1/1,886 sounds like heaps but it's still rare in New Zealand, and it's a rare column shift bucket car! Hmmmm how do I break it down even more? A/C-Heater, Vinyl roof, Light package, Tic/Tac/Toc, Body side moldings, Power windows, Power Brakes, Power Steering. :D

Chrysler had sales figures for each option broken down into percentages.

What people do is apply percentages to the totals to get an idea of how many were made like that.

So for example;

If you had these chrysler percentages (Like Galen Govier and a few others) and you saw that 1.5% of 1970 Challengers sold had a certain option. Then they just work out what that percentage is of the total and come up with a figure. What people fail to understand though that these figures can only ever be aproximate. The percentages were rounded up figures for a start.

Where the math really starts to fall apart is when people try to deduct one percentage from another and try to work out how many had pink paint and a 440 and auto trans and vinyl top etc etc

Say I worked out that from 2000 cars only 10% had wigit#1.
That means around 200 cars had that wigit.

But if I also know that 10% of that 2000 also had wigit#2 I cannot say that 20 of my 200 had wigit#2.
All the wigit#2 cars might have been in the 1800 that did not have wigit#1!

So I take all these "one of 70" or "one of 6" made claims with a big pinch of salt. Because most of the time the only evidence for that is "because Galen Govier said so".

I still didn't find out what mine is. My VIN starts with JH23G1B. It is a 71 318 automatic. Any help?

PostPosted: 17 Apr 2004 7:09
by dave-r
Those are the only specific numbers we have.

I can give you an educated guess though. 18,420 with the 318. Any guess about how many were automatic would be just that. A wild guess. But it would be the majority.

Hi guys

Hi every 1,,yes mopar did give their final production in percentages, but if you do the math , more often than not it works out.
On the 71 sheets ,it lists the total above ( 3907 ) and say what ever option said there was 10 % ,well do the math and it does work out..

This is how they kept track of what options were selling,,So they option the challengers that were sent to the dealerships ( salesbank cars )
If they knew plum crazy cars were selling ,then they would build fc7 cars,,here in Canada they knew what kind of cars were selling the best in certain provinces..In alot of cases if purple cars were selling in the west ,they would get a few more fc7 cars.

In Fact I can tell you for fact that in Canada they kept track of what sold in certain provinces,,such as sunroofs..true..
I have alot of facts on Canadian shipments for 70-71 challenger and cudas.. you woud be amazed .
Any way enough rambling.. I'm out of here. RAPID

This may be a stupid question, apologies beforehand.

I've been reading these production # sheets with limited understanding.
So can anyone tell me, who is Galen Govier, and how accurate are his documentations from the Chrysler Registry. Anyone have experience with his documentations ?

I sent him a paper tracing of the Vin, underhood tag, and broadcast sheet copy last year.

It's just I have a sheet from his Chrysler Registry, signed by him, that indicates a '72 340 Challenger I own is "18th of 23 produced, only 1 known to still exist in the Chrysler Registry as of 09/2004."

Would you guys place more stock in his analysis or go by these sheets ?
How many cars are in his "Chrysler Registry" ?

Not that I really care, the car was cheap anyway, even as just good transportation value, it drives good and reliable, ( 55,000 original). I'm just really curious now.

So my 73 rally 340 4 speed numbers car is one of one, lol.I dont see any export cars in 73 and mine is one

You don't see any export numbers because we don't have any. Some export numbers (hemi cars for example) have been deduced but above is all that Chrysler's records show.

No-one said the list was complete.

MY 1970 Challenger R/T SE is one of three JS29's with a 999 paint code according to Daimler Chrysler's records.

hi im guessing that those production sheets are only for the hamtramck plant as i dont see any la vin numbers listed
cheers ian

PostPosted: 15 Apr 2006 15:45
by dave-r
Which ones? The ones i posted at the top of the thread?

Yes they are for BOTH plants. The reason some have the "B" code included is that all hemi cars and all convertibles were made at Hamtramck so all of the VINs for those cars contain the "B" plant code without exception.

hi
No-one said the list was complete. i realise this is so however 318 cars dont seem to get a mention in most lists & i have seem other web sites that claim 318 were not available in 1970 but this cant be true as my vin is JH29G0E etc does anyone have any ideas why these cars were left out of these lists & maybe what kind of numbers of se's were 318 auto's (just curious)
cheers ian

They are not left out of the list. They are included in the totals. They are just not singled out because when the lists were produced people were not interested in the 318, slant six, or even the 383-2bbl cars.

Ian.

Check out the production numbers on my old web site at www.dodgechallenger.co.uk. The numbers are a bit off the mark but they were the best I could deduce 9 years ago when I worked them out.

They are close enough though.

The best i could do was work out how many 318 and 383 2bbl cars were produced together in 1970 and 1971. I do have the 1972 figure for 318 cars.

Ian. They are all rare and worth good money now. The days when people were snobs about their engine size has almost (but not quite) gone.

As my mate Ray used to say "It's big enough to fill a pram". Only i don't think he was talking about his engine.

You donĀ“t happen to know the paint codes of the other two cars, do you?

I think your car is really something. :s007: (See: http://challenger.mpoli.fi/forum/viewto ... 9209#19209 ) Do you also drive it from time to time or is it a "trailer queen". (I have nothing against trailer queens in general. The only thing that is important is that the owner is happy, if you ask me.)
