Christer, I drive the car between two and 4 times per month. If all I wanted to do was collect trophies, I would just go to the shop, order them and skip all the hard work and fun of building the car. I LIKE doing 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds..... did it today in the GTX, actually.

As for the color, I spoke with GG about my car at the Spring Fling. He thought my Challenger had been one of Dick Landy's cars but based on our conversation, it probably wasn't. Dick's 70 Challenger was an R/T SE and was the same color as mine, so mine is at the least one of two and possibly one of three painted EA9 Charcoal Iridescent.

My information on sunroof Challengers is this;

Initially the sunroofs were done by Creative Industries and then also by American Sunroof Co (ASC). The parts do not interchange.

ASC had offices in LA, St. Louis and Detroit and CI just had Detroit.

ASC started doing Chryslers in Detroit around late 1970? So I assume any made before that were done by Creative. Chrysler then used both companies.

ASC's St. Louis facility opened around July 1971?

ASC's LA facility opened in Summer '72.

Cars made in plants outside Detroit before 1971/72 had to be shipped to Detroit and back again to have a Sunroof fitted.

My information is that Chrysler began in-house factory sunroof installations for the '73 model year.

So that is three sources for the "factory fitted" sunroofs. Many customers could also have one fitted by the dealership or privately as they became a popular modification in the 70s.

If the car has the sunroof code on the fender tag then I would call it a "selling point" rather than something that adds any value to the car.

That sucks as the fender tag is missing in action im sure it was done by asc i have the asc service manual and that seems pretty much what it is. the metal sliding panel is pretty damaged any idies on wher to get another??? im pretty sure asc used the same sunroof in all the big 3 cars (the golde sunroof) so maybe one from another anything the correct size will fit??

Yes they used the same sunroof on everything.

Heinz Prechter (the founder of ASC) came to Detroit from LA in 1968 to install sunroofs in Mercury Cougars, the first American car to have a factory built sunroof. He built a small asembly line in Ecorse, a Detroit suburb, in a rented building to do the Cougars. So chances are the sunroof fitted to these are the same too.

The 1970 production printout from Daimler/Chrysler says .2% of the Challenger series that year had sunroofs. Galen's book has these figures years ago: 1 T/A, 114 Challengers and 82 R/T's had sunroofs for a total of 197 in 1970. 21 Challengers and 27 R/T's were so blessed in 1971 for a total of 48. His 1972 figures do not show how many sunroof cars were made, but between 1970 and 1971, there were only 245 of them built.

As the 70s came on the sunroof option became more and more popular which is why eventually Chrysler decided to start fitting their own.

Without the fender tag or build sheet it is impossible to prove the car was optioned for the sunroof.

Yes that is an interesting story. http://automotivemileposts.com/prod1960tbird.html. So the claim that the Cougar was the first is not correct.

Hi dave-r,

Is it possible for you to give the source of those numbers. I found a couple of other figures and they are in the same range but seem to be never the same.

I just bought an A66 black/black Challenger in excellent shape. Just waiting to drive it; it has to pass the local technical certification at the end of the month.

Thanks for the answer.

The numbers at the start of this thread are chryslers own via Galen Glover who obtained the numbers and started this whole obsession with them.

The numbers were taken from a percentage of actual sales. Chrysler did not track the actual numbers, just the percentages. Any numbers you see taken from the percentages are the publishers own guess.

Ken has a good explanation of this in the FAQ section of www.aarta.com

Hi all,

According to the previous owner, the car is all original and wasn't modified since it was delivered.

I have seen lots of threads about the A66 code but this car has all of the advertised options described in the '70 dealer documentation including the 'Scat Pack' decals on the rear windows. It has a console and a 4-speed pistol grip gearbox.

The R/T embelms were not added later (according to the same person). It's quite strange but who knows ?

If I correctly read the datas at the beginning of this thread, only 1'830 of them were built (2'819 from another source - http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=100). Maybe the A66 code will get some more attention in the future.

Other figures anyone ?

Sometimes the numbers (percentages) only include USA shipped cars. Sometimes they include Canadian as well. Non of them seem to take much account of cars exported to other countries.

The only cars I know of where we know the exact numbers are the Canadian shipped Hemis. I have a list of every VIN number.

I have only heard of one 'Export" A66 car so far. The order came from overseas, so it was an export car, but it is coded Y11 so it was ordered by a US Serviceman for pick up when he returned to the US.

A fair number of 'export" cars never left the US, but Chrysler did not track those figures. Or if they did, no documentation on them has surfaced yet.......

Lots of A66 info in the thread at http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... art=1&vc=1

Like most threads, not all of it may be accurate, I have not read it in quite some time.

According to the fender tag, my copy was built according to 'Canadian' specifications.

Since I'm quite new to this 'world', can anybody explain what 'Canadian' specifications means.

Since I live in a country where everything not forbidden is mandatory, I can understand that some regulations are not the same but I would be interested to be able to spot those differences.

A tach and odometer in km instead of miles, maybe.
Other specifications I'm not aware of.
Rear defrost and undercoating might be standard issue, I don't know about plow wings and salt spreaders though

Very nice looking car thanks for the pictures! What other option does it have?

Mine had the R/T emblems on the fenders only when purchased in 1976. I added the grill and trunk later. Always suspected the fenders were pre-drilled for them so the line worker had to fill the holes. :| Hood drilled for the 340-four barrel also. LA Oct 69 build.

Hi Jon,

The fender tag looks like that :

V9X Y07 26 EN1
M21 N41 N42 N85 R11 V21
V1X A62 A66 C16 C55 J45
TX9 H6X9 000 B08 C16127
E55 D21 JH23 H0B xxxxxx

It has not so many options.

I have a question regarding options. A66 means performance package ok.

So are all other option codes for real other options or can these options be part of A66 ? That is for instance, A62 could be included in A66.

I tried to find the build sheet but it seems that the seats although looking original have been replaced. So if there was a chance to find it, it went with the old seats.

My understanding is the raised hood, rally dash, disc brakes, and HD suspension were included in the a66 package. Mine also has the 15" wheels, but no stripe in back.

Does your VIN end in 525?

A66 info at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/ima ... er0024.jpg It does have a typo though, the bee decals were in the rear quarter windows, not on the rear quarter panel.

Y07 indicates built for Canadian sale, so does the C prefix VON. The speedometer was in MPH, Canada was not using the Metric system back then.

A62 was standard on 1970 R/T models, optional on the A66 cars.

Places to look for broadcast sheets just in case.........

Taped to the back side / top of the glove box insert.
Under the front bucket seats in the springs
Inside the bucket seat backs
Under the rear seat bottom
In the rear seat back.
Under the package tray (speaker shelf)
Under the carpet
