Can someone tell me the easiest way to tell if a 71 challenger is an origial r/t. The car has stripes and a front grill with an r/t emblem but no fender emblems. Previous owner said it was an r/t. I am not sure.

Look at the VIN. A 71 R/T will have a VIN that starts with JS while a plain 71 Challenger's VIN will begin with JH.

If the VIN starts with JS it's a R/T, while when it starts with JH it's a 'normal' challenger Dan.

Thank you guys. That makes me very happy. I found a real deal this weekend. I was browsing for parts to my 71 conv and found an ad for a 71 r/t w/383. I called and found out he wanted $2500. I looked at pictures on the web that did the car no justice. I sent him a deposit and immediately drove to virginia to get her. I was shocked to find the car complete with a very immpressive fender tag. It has a ton of options. He said it hasn't been started in three years. The frame is solid x for a crack in the left fwd frame rail. I brought it home ,charged the battery and it started right up and runs great. It needs paint and some repairs around the windshield and back window. I still think I'm dreaming. He had no clue what this car could bring on e-bay or even just parted out. I am now stripping the front end off for a frame rail replacement. I will post pictures tomorrow.
