Finding a specific VIN-car

Postby Johannes Brudevoll (Johan » 14 Mar 2003 7:27

Should we register VIN for stolen cars, or perhaps if you are trying to find your old car out there....or even try to get in contact with old owners...get the cars history...If you know of a total wreck (which identity can be used for a stolen car...)

Does anyone know if there already exist a GOOD register like this?
Would we like to have such a register,...or are there good reasons for NOT having one?
I sure would hate one day to find out that my car was stolen say 10-15 years ago....
Or if my Chally was stolen one day, how could I let other challenger owners know to be looking for my "baby"?
I was once told, that owning an american car was "SAFE" because of the VIN tag. I'm not so sure....
The web SHOULD enable us to communicate fast, and offer rewards, etc.... for getting info on most anything.
Comments anyone ??

Finding a specific VIN-car

Like the idea Johannes, but I don't know if there are reasons to have not something like this. Then it also could be used to find # matching engine/trans and lost build sheets etc.

I know they do something like this on Moparts.com but that's for mopars in general. Not so easy when we are 'only' looking for Challenger stuff.

I like the idea but as said I don't know if sharing VINs is a dangerous thing (cause also many people do list the last part of the VIN like ****** on the tag) Anybody else?

It can and is done to an extent. I keep track of every "0B" 1970 VIN I hear of or see, I know of several broadcast sheets available to be claimed, but they are mostly for T/As. If anyone has a 1970 Challenger (or other car) built at Hamtramck in 1970, send me the info and I will start a file on it. If I have a file on it already I will tell you what I know about it.

Please mail any information or requests to me at;

The Challenger T/A Registry
P. O. Box 9632
Ketchikan, AK. 99901

Include VIN, fender tag codes, and broadcast sheet copy if you have it, or if you are missing an item such as a broadcast sheet, fender tag or engine, etc. let me know that too. If I know of anything for your car or ever hear of it I will contact you. I have a few thousand 1970 Hamtramck VINs currenly on file.

I should like to see a registry like that. For all (by me known) Challenger that has been on the road in Sweden I have a history register incl VIN.

However can I see the problem to have such registery available on the net. Database regulations in different countries, but most of all the missuse by certain people i.e. fraude with VIN scrapped cars will "reborn" if a VIN are available. I should also like to have info how to safeguard that "my" information don't comes to the wrong people and be missused.

Hi Mike,
Sure thing, send me an email at sixpak340_att.net, just replace the underline with a @. Include your mailing address and I will send you a membership form. Membership in the registry is free, and no personal information is given out to anyone, it is for my files only.

If I know of anything for your car, or ever here about any history I will contact you immediately.

Finding a specific VIN-car

Postby Joda » 31 Aug 2004 2:31

I think it would be a great idea Johannes, I was a young lad of 20 years old when my 1971 Challenger was stolen. Thats 25 years ago, I had pumped $6000. CAD into the car just before the car was stolen.
The car was never found and seeing the insurance coverage had just expired the day before, I have never recieved a dime from my insurance.

If such a register would be available we may be able to recover stolen cars much easier.
