Thanks. I'm finding some of the info out. The car currently has a 360 with pistol grip 4 speed. Air conditioning. It has the rallye hood, dash, and side fender gills. No exhaust cutouts in the rear. Seems to have been a 318/3 speed originally with AC. Seems like a strange combo to me. Is the axle info on this tag? Thanks in advance for the help.

E44 : 318-2bbl
D13 : 3speed man. on floor
JH23 : Dodge Challenger coupe
G4B : 318 engine, 1974, Hammtrack
KJ6 : gold metallic exterior color
A6X9 : black interior trim
000 : full door panels
B08 : built November 8th
E31845 : order#
KJ6 : ?
1 : ?
A57 : Rallye package
B41 : Front discs, power brakes
C56 : Bucket seats w/ centre console
G21 : Clear glass all around?
G54 : Chrome remote left racing mirror
G64 : Dual racing mirrors ??
G74 : Chrome manual right racing mirror
H51 : A/C
J25 : Variable speed wipers w/ electric washer
J54 : RT / Rallye hood
M08 : Side fender wings

R11 : AM Radio
V6X : Black rallye side stripes (strop***? or something)
26 : 26" radiator
L2 : End of option codes
939 : ?

There are some guesses though...
a) didn't know they include a M08; isn't this std with A57 code?
b) 2nd KJ6, seems to me as an gold vinyl top, but wasn't another code?
c) code 1, replacement for "built by US specs"?
d) codes G21, G64 & 939 ??

Axle info could be found on the broadcast sheet if available which in most cases is not. Hope the rest is able to sort the ??codes out for you Greg.

I see Hans has made a start. Good.

You are right Hans in that KJ6 after the order number is the roof code. but a vinyl top code starts with a V. When you see a paint code in that place it means the top was painted! So this is a non-vinyl top car.

The figure '1' after the top code means this is an export spec car not intended for the US or Canadian market.

You got tinted glass as standard with AC so if you wanted (or needed for export regs) clear glass you had to have the G21 code.

I am not sure about those two G codes G64/G74.

Oh and I think any numbers after L2 on the tag must be inspection marks.

That "1" is actually a capital I and it meant International. There were three possible codes for that space on the tag, U for United States, C for Canada and I for International. As for the two G codes - sorry, my book for your year is still AWOL and I can't remember what those meant.

I'm in the USA. What is different on the International model?
Is the 318/3 speed with Rallye package common?

It was mostly a matter of conforming to the spec for the country it was going to. Small things like headlight bulb wattage might have been different (but I am only guessing here).

The biggest difference I do know about was that normally these cars got speedometers that read in kilometers instead of miles.

Oh I forgot to say the 318 Rallye was common in 1973-4. The Rallye package was just that - a package that could be ordered on any Challenger.

Not many people would have gone for the three speed manual though. However I remember that in the mid-70s insurance companies were sticking higher premiums on anything with a manual 4-speed as it was considered 'performance' even if it was on your wifes wagon!

It is getting late for me. I am off to bed!
