Hi guys
can someone help me decode a car. This tag is on a convertable challenger plumb car that i was looking to buy. owner could not tell me the year. grill was missing. I have included the fender tag below. also is there any body or frame numbers or date /code i can look for. I think the car had been restored and built on another frame. Also if it had been built on a rust free frame would you still call it a number matching car? Owner did not think it was a big deal when i asked. What do you all think? here are the numbers on the tag

1970 is the tag date

There should be a number on the cowl that matches the the vin on the tag, if it has been re-bodied then it is NOT a matching numbers car, and it may raise some legal issues if you buy it

Go here http://www.challenger440.pwp.blueyonder. co.uk/cgi-bin/disc/show.cgi?tpc=6&post=4 119#POST4119

Sometimes people cut these numbers out and weld them into a body from another car. There are also dates stamped into many of the parts on the car.

But as Alex says the tag is from a 1970 convertible so it is ok so far....

They don't have frames. They are unibody construction.

If you mean can they make a 1970 car look like a 1971 by swapping grille, taillights, interior, etc the answer is yes. It is a lot more difficult with the 72-74 models but it can still be done.

If you mean can they cut the numbers out of a 1971 car and weld them into another car then the answer to that is yes too.

Thx Dave,
Just wanted to know what to look for. I might walk from this deal. The owner listed it as a 71. But vin says different.
